Updated UX Design for Roku Version 6.6.8 is a step backwards

I predict a Decade long battle - I’ll never see the end of - that still won’t get us back to the app we had at the end of last week.

The divide between Plex and it’s User Base has never been wider than it is right now (Valles Marineris). Plex doesn’t even have any idea what they did wrong. As far as Plex is concerned - all we need to do is ‘Get Used To It’ 'cause we’re just resistant to change.

I have no idea what changes Plex will make or not in the future. But the idea they don’t push out changes to the Roku app seems wrong. Look at the last few pages of releases and dates:

Plex for Roku - #220 by ljunkie

It’s been once every week or two this year. Maybe the changes aren’t what you’re hoping for, but it looks like a pretty good cadence to me.

I have no idea what this even means.

UNO on the Shield looks nothing like UNO on the ATV 4K.
If it ever does, I may start to care about the Shield again.
I mean don’t even know wtf Roku UNO is and I know you know better than to assume it was the forerunner for the UNO interface.
A few of my users have them and they are just happy that I share my server with them.
None of them have complained about WTF just happened to the UI/UX.

That said to further my comment about not personally using shuffle I do get it. Though I’m not inclined to go in the other room and check up how buried the shuffle feature is on the Roku I will take others word for it. On the ATV 4K , shuffle play is right up front on the show page and is an extra click on the season page.

Once more you seem determined to pass opinions/comparisons on a client you have never used.
If you are relaying “others” opinions then feel free to link me to some sprawling thread on hatred of UNO on the ATV 4K. Hopefully far more sprawling than this 90 odd post thread made up of a dozen or so individual users.

Let me spell it out.
Previously you stated (far more than needed) along the lines of how the Roku UI/UX is (or at least was) what other clients strived to be.
No, it never was, it was simply more bearable than Android TV. Hell, I think I just agreed with you on something.
What I will always take exception to is you constantly commenting or making comparisons with a client you have never used by your own admission.
The ATV 4K UI has always made the Roku one look average (long before UNO) and every day since.
Seemingly that gap gets wider each day.

Maybe somebody can re-open that. I see Director (and Writer) metadata for some recently-added episodes, but not all. I haven’t compared with TVDB or other sources.

I am in total agreement with the OP.
My main complaints are based from using Plex mainly to record live tv. So, previously when scrolling through the episodes, you could see the title of the episode. Now it just shows the show name and episode number. The title of the episode is off the top of the screen. So basically, you need to click into an episode to see its details, including the episode title. I know the explanation is confusing, but it worked great before.
Also, now, to delete something takes 8 clicks. It just seems like this “update” did nothing but make navigation a lot less streamlined and make the information that was at our fingertips more labor intense to find.
I am actually frustrated using it now and a couple of times just smacked home and went over to Philo to find something to watch instead of clicking around through the hobbled UI.
Please please please bring us back.
If you want to add features, please add them ,but dont just shuffle stuff around on us. One feature I would like to see is on live tv, ability to sort the episodes by record date (or unwatched first) instead of locked into sorted by episode year/number.
Thanks for listening

I think it made “I know which episode I want to play” one click easier. There’s less going in and out, back and forth, for that.

But it also seems like some other operations are a step “further away”, if that makes sense.

Well - I don’t like the UNO I have now.
How 'bout you?

We have separate development teams for Roku, Android, iOS, web, etc. Each team uses their own devices and is well aware of how it works, and every version is tested thoroughly prior to release.

UNO is an ongoing process, and not all screens on all clients are currently using UNO designs. If you want to do a comparison, have a look at the home screen. That should be very, very similar on Android TV, Apple TV, Roku, and our web based TV clients (currently in preview). The new screens you’re seeing on Roku should look very similar to the ones on Apple TV. Android TV has quite different screens for episodes and movies at the moment, as the new look has yet to be done on Android TV. If you’re seeing drastically different screens, that’s a good hint that it’s not an UNO design.

This new update hurts my eyes. First, there is a reason I never used the high contrast settings. White text on a stark black background makes the eye work harder causing strain. Please go back. The gray background was much easier view.

Also, there is too much bloat with the thumbnails and buttons. By making everything larger, you instead reduce the amount of information that can be displayed.

Finally, I miss my shuffle button. We used it all the time; almost daily. Burying it in the more options has become a nuisance. Please bring back the shuffle button.

Wow – so it was intentional to design it the way it is now and was tested thoroughly prior to release. That really does say it all !!!

Totally understood. The point I was making is that on the ATV 4K Plex really nailed it a long time ago.
(and that it was indeed the forerunner for UNO.)
Any tweaks since then have only improved it.

I just have little time for others spreading misinformation day after day.

And for you loving a apple product, haven’t you come a long way. Lol

As spreading misinformation, I’m definitely with you on that front. But I must say the new WebOS Preview app is just Dynamite, what an improvement. A few things to work on and who knows were UNO will go, WebGL has been awesome. Lets hope Roku development will forge ahead the same.

They got the clicks up from 31 to 34 to filter for Westerns, for instance - if you start ‘in the blocks’ poised over ‘All’.
It’s a Baker’s Dozen clicks to turn a subtitle on - or off.
It’s 5 clicks to mark an episode as watched - after you set the button placement… so 6 for the first one.

Basically, doing stuff like that is now easier to get up, fire up Plexweb and do it there. <—and make a Westerns Collection with 255 Westerns in it.

I’m not sure how much more ‘Forging Ahead’ I can take. They pretty much have us Forged right up against a wall and we’re fresh out of Wall.

I hear you Juice, fresh out of wall and up against the barbed wire. I know it can be a prickly existence at times, then a bright light takes you by surprise. Lol

“Out here, due process is a bullet!” Care of John Wayne

Wow so every development team on Roku either only straight plays items not changing any setting or gets paid by (a) number of clicks a user has to make to access basic functionality (b) how obscure basic functions are and hence difficult to find.

I really do not care about the looks (actually I do but that is matter of taste so whatever) but the usability of this new roll out is awful.

Here you go one of the first links found on google regarding UX Digital Product Designer | Product Innovation Services in Bangalore - Appiness Interactive maybe the team can buy some books, read some articles, do some actual user testing (basic user, power user, multi-language user, etc) and come up with something better.

Because you cannot claim honestly that such click count as reported below or how well hidden subtitles are is something to be proud of.

the top metric and rule for any UX design should be strive for the lowest number of clicks to complete any task.

Those are “User” metrics and rules. A “User” never laid eyes on this mess until we did.

Plex metrics are driven by internal logistics - the ONLY interaction with Users Plex wishes to get involved in - so the more clicks we click, the better Plex knows what we want… in theory.

How it works out in real life is it’s 34 clicks to Westerns, etc - and I’m not sure what they’re finding out about us as we hammer on those remote like Bosco, The Calculating Chicken, but I’m am sure it isn’t what I want.

Again, this is speculation and misinformation. Please refrain from doing so.

I don’t disagree that 34 clicks to westerns is too much.

that said,

  1. click search
  2. type w
  3. type e
  4. type s
  5. type t
  6. type e
  7. type r
  8. type n
  9. type s

of course each letter (may) take X # of clicks (on a remote control) that are not being accounted for, but I hope you get my meaning.
