Updated UX Design for Roku Version 6.6.8 is a step backwards

Thank you, Lisa. I just broke out my dictionary and added a word to my vocabulary. Much appreciated. :+1:t2:

I’m not sure when it happened, but I would like to add that I am super happy with the standard color scheme. At some point they fixed the default to remove orange from the gradient which really didn’t play well with any of my TVs. I had used several colorful words in the past to describe it.

I have taken all of my Roku Plex apps off “High Contrast Mode” as a result, so, thank you Plex for that!

I love the new UI design, however needs more consistency but trust this will be done. I love to see the orange indicator on posters will be removed as it destroys the looks. Please go for the orange bar

Please update also the home UI (I.e. blurred, fanart etc) instead of only the info detailed pages.

People need to adjust to new things and that is why they cannot move forward with UI
 but hé folks
apps do change and requires a tweak now and then and otherwise watch the movie Back to the Future

I hate to keep coming back with new stuff, but I found an oddity in the new interface. I have several shows which only have one season. As such, I have the library set to hide the seasons if there is only one.

So now
when I click into a show, it shows the episodes listed below the show description (man I really miss when they all looked like that). When I select any of them, I would expect them to start playing, but instead, I am taken to the episode page as it should now be displayed with the episode ribbon at the top. I have to select the episode again to get it to play
or I could select a different one, because that’s the way this wacky iteration works. :stuck_out_tongue:

Long story short, I think this is another case for consistency across navigation because I believe it worked the old way when episodes were consistently displayed at the bottom, did it not? Episodes used to launch at the show level if they were so displayed, right? My memory is faulty

If the solution is to have them play from the show level (as they should) I would now have a different look and feel to launching an episode than I would if there were multiple seasons.

I had to do the same thing recently for a show I am watching that has characters speaking alien languages in every episode so I have to turn on the forced English subtitles for every single episode so I have translations for those parts. It is quite annoying to have to dig through those menu clicks to turn the subs on for nearly 40 episodes because there isn’t a way to turn it on all at once, either for the entire show or at least an entire season. Another bad design by Plex which I’m sure will never get fixed.

Use the web app to set audio & subtitle preferences for your account.

Whatever you do, don’t watch Game of Thrones
 same issue, lots of episodes.

If you don’t manually change any of the subtitle settings, we’ll automatically set the correct subtitles, based on your account preferences, as @Volts has mentioned. Just ensure your subs are correctly marked as forced.

However, once you’ve made a manual subtitle selection, we won’t override it.

I just looked at my GOT to show some Forced Subs
and remembered I burned those in

But I recently upgraded this one:

Currently, this is one of the things that works as I expect it.
The Account Setting is ‘Always Show’.
The Roku Setting is, usually, On Replay.

However, if I do nothing, the Forced Sub track is auto selected, 'cause without that I won’t know what the foreigners are saying. If I haven’t yet switched the Roku to Always On - I’ll pretty soon not know what the foreigners are saying - with the Roku in ‘On Replay’
lol. <— that’s a quick fix with the * button. As we know.

I am meticulous with track labels and tags - so things work as I expect them to - and subs do work as I expect
except the part about the dozen clicks to do anything with them if they’re NOT auto selected (another reason, currently, I suppose - to get that part working locally).

Thanks for that, I have just set my account to use Forced Subtitles so hopefully this will enable them for all episodes which require it and I will ever have to manually turn them on for each episode ever again. Great help, much appreciated!

You mean the account language/subtitle preferences that aren’t working properly right now?

Yes, those ones, which still work correctly in the case of forced subs, just not when you want full subs all the time. This post is about forced subs, so is still helpful. No need for snark.

Thank you! That’s very helpful to me. I wish it weren’t so buried, and I wish there were the option on the Roku itself.

Well for me that makes no sense at all.
Plex have offered that account setting for a long time. Having to set it on multiple clients? Now that would really suck.

@DaveBinM This whole topic piqued my interest with regards to “managed” home users.
I just checked a few accounts and it seems they are all set to “forced subs only” despite not recalling ever setting their account for that. Do managed users inherit my settings, or did I just forget I set it for them a long time ago?

Uhhh, I don’t know off the top of my head to be honest, I’d need to test it out to check, I don’t personally use managed users

No worries.
I didn’t really see anything in the support articles about it, and its no big deal.
Kinda cool if it does though.

Just took a look at the Xbox version and I have to note a few things I think they’ve done better:

  • Overall, their description fields across the entire app make way better use of the available space.
  • The Episode level has no cast or suggestions at the bottom of the screen, which really makes it appear tighter and well organized. That stuff is fine at the Show level, but it seems a little too much extra here.
  • Episodes on their ribbon don’t greywash out for any reason.
  • Upon entering the Episode level, focus is on the ribbon and the selected episode. The downside on the Xbox is that it doesn’t focus on the next unwatched episode.

You should expect that one to change as well. We’re aiming for a consistent experience on all devices, so eventually they should both land on the same look and functionality. However, that does mean that as we compile feedback, and work out the best way forward, you may see some inconsistencies like that.

I figured there would be, but thought it notable to point out some things I thought they’d done well.
