I upgraded my Virtual Machine for Plex from a 4 core Xeon-D and 16 Gigs of ram and a single 1GB NIC to a Ryzen 7000, 128GB and Dual 10GE. and connected it to a 10GE NAS (upgraded as well)
I find that the response times to autoscan and detect files is slow. However, my main concern is it take a fair bit longer for the app to load on my client devices as well as loading movie content. I sometimes get tat the service is unavailable. I have a relatively large database though (12GB) and not sure if plex has hit some type of limit. Thought ono why a faster CPU, more RAM, dedicated hardware rather than shared in a VM would run slower?
The 10GBE is fine on a segmented network with your NAS storage but is inefficient when mixed with video apps that are optimized for 1500 byte frames.
Yep. If you can enable jumbo frames, it helps but I do not know if many streaming devices or SmartTVs support Jumbo frames.
However; having a 10GB (or two in my case port-channeled) does help when streaming multiple streams on different devices…hmm, I wonder about multicast and Plex.
Jumbo frames should not be an issue, not on 10GE. You won’t see much if any improvement. However on 100MB or 1G, possibly. However, the issue is slow to open times. Slow to connect to plex, remote or locally, slow to launch movies. Transcoding is not an issue as I have a 16G P5000 NVidia card. one of the best around for multiple transcodes. Occasionally, I also get “an unexpected error” message and I have to retry the connection. Very odd, especially from a web browser on the same local lan segment. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the size of my database and/or the cache size assigned. I just tried bumping the cache up to a 1024 to see if this helps.
Can you post your server logs? and have you tried ChuckPa’s database repair tool? it can also be used to optimize the db too
I can upload them later today. And no, I have not. the database is new. I just migrated from the VM to the new physical box. I’ll look and see now though. thanks
I was MIA for a bit. I move plex over to a 1GB NIC and same issue.
