Upgraded from DSM 6.2.4 to 7.1.1, Latest Plex Server, now servers are inaccessable

Server Version#: 1.41.7.9823
Player Version#: 4.146.0

As subject stated, Upgraded my Synology DS414 from DSM 6.2.4 up to the latest DSM 7.1.1. Used the correct Plex server software for the processor in the NAS, and everything seemed to go along perfectly until I tried to access my media. It’s not accessible. Followed the instructions to give my account (the account with the stored media) read/write access to the PlexMediaServer account, but no luck there either.

I have 2 NAS devices where content is stored, uncleverly names Diskstation and Diskstation2. Neither of these show as available, “DiskStation is currently unavailable, Verify you have a network connection and that the server is online, or see our tips for further assistance.” Same message for both. Plex Server is running on the unit called Diskstation.

One thing that might be a clue here is that there is now a NEW server called Diskstation that shows as online, but there is NO content, none of my previous settings are correct, etc. It is as if it’s a brand new install instead of just updating the original installation.

I tried searching the forums, found a few things that didn’t help. I fully uninstalled the Plex server installing, Uninstall only (save all files), rebooted the NAS, then reinstalled. Nothing changed.

Need help getting my Diskstations back online properly, hopefully without having to start from scratch!

Look in the Plex shared folder.

Do you still have Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server ?

I suspect you do. If they exist then you missed the procedure required to set permissions (now required in DSM 7).

If the permissions had been set, you’d have seen it sit at “Installing” for a perios of time while it migrated you from DSM 6 → DSM 7
( Username, Shared Folder Name, and all file permissions changed due to DSM 7’s internal changes)

Here is how you migrate your DSM 6 installation to DSM 7 without losing any information.

There are a lot of steps. Make certain you do not miss any
(most important is the Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files when you get to that point)

You will want “Scenario 2”

Yes, everything is still inside the Plex shared folder.

Following through on all the settings for Scenario 2, I went through and set all the permissions as they are supposed to be for the PlexMediaServer shared folder, including making sure that I check the box for “Apply to this folder, subfolders…” clicked save. It took a LONG time, but came back up and has the permission designated as “Full Control”. I saved that out again, then uninstalled the current install of Plex Server as instructed. Since it did show as installed, I followed the step in Stage 2, Line 1a and selected to Remove everything instead of just uninstalling.

Trying to reinstall Plex now, and I keep getting the error that the shared folder does not have the necessary permissions. I even rebooted the NAS thinking that maybe with the permission’s changes that it needed to be rebooted. I went back in to the permissions for that folder and verified that everything was set correctly, applied all the same permissions again (went very fast) and attempted the install a second time. Still no go. I’m at an impass right now, unable to install Plex Sever due to the preinstallation checks failing.

Scenario 2 does not seem to be working for me as indicated above. Should I try the “Claim Token” method, or will that mess things up further?

You’ve made a grave error here — WRONG Shared Folder

You used: PlexMediaServer – This is incorrect.

You want this one: Plex shared folder (where your server’s data is)

We are going to move from the Plex shared folder → PlexMediaServer shared folder. The DSM 7 app already has R/W access

In DSM 7,

  1. We can’t use the Plex shared folder anymore
  2. We can’t use user Plex anymore.
  3. We lost all privileges to do this automatically for you (why you need to do it)

At this point.

  1. Confirm you have given System Internal User PlexMediaServer Fulll Control of the PLEX shared folder and Applied to this folder, sub-folders and files

  2. Uninstall the DSM 7 app

  3. Delete the PlexMediaServer shared folder. (it will be recreated with correct permissions)

  4. Now install the DSM 7 app,
    – It will sit at “Installing” as it does all its work .
    – DO NOT interrupt the installation. If you do, it can be corrupted

** Open a second tab to the Syno
** After about 3 minutes, in the Plex shared folder,
** You will see Migration.log
** This is how I let you know what’s happening.

This is what you’ll see.

As you can see, the most time consuming part is making certain permissions are as they need be. (the first step)

When all processing is complete,

  1. Plex shared folder should be empty. ( I remove `Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server )
  2. Anything you’ve placed in the Plex shared folder will remain.
  3. The Server will now live in the PlexMediaServer shared folder
  4. Due to how restrictive DSM 7 is, Please DO NOT put anything in the PlexMediaServer shared folder.
    – I made it visible so you can make backups and get logs if needed.

OK, I see where I messed that up. Probably should have had a bit more sleep in me before I attempted this.

I fixed the permissions on the correct share, removed the PlexMediaServer share since I messed that one up, and started the Plex Server install. Everything went according to plan with the exception of 3 PNG files which in the log states that the “Operation Not Permitted”. They don’t appear to be critical files, so hopefully that won’t be a problem.

Upon going in today, everything appears to be back to normal. I’ll have to do some remote testing, but from what I’m seeing, I don’t see any reason that everything won’t work as it did before.

@eaDir is created by DSM.

If everything is working and you still have Plex / Library / …
then it’s ok to delete it (empty the Plex shared folder)

Aside from the Migration.log file, the original “Plex” Shared folder is completely empty. Is it safe to just go ahead and remove the original Plex Shared folder at this point since there is nothing in it?

You can safely remove

  1. Shared Folder - Plex
  2. Local User - Plex

Everything now uses PlexMediaServer name (user and shared folder)

Hi. thanks to this thread I have solved my issue and got Plex working again, so thank you all.

A question I have to ask though is that whilst the library appears fixed, my “Plex” shared folder still contains all my media whilst the “PlexMediaServer” has no media. Thats not what I was expecting.

For Reference, my migration log is as below:
Plex Media Server migration to DSM 7 started: Wed Aug 6 17:14:51 IST 2025

For all the media in your Plex shared folder, You can continue to use it exactly as it is.

There is no reason to do anything.

DSM 7 forced us to create a new shared folder and username.

I do ask, Please DO NOT put any media in the PlexMediaServer shared folder.
On DSM 7, Plex has NO privileges anymore. The installer doesn’t (I don’t) can’t fix anything as PMS installs like I could on DSM 6

For all new shared folders with media, grant permission to PlexMediaServer.

User Plex can safely be deleted. I was forced to abandon it in DSM 7
(I would have removed it for you if I had the privilege)
