Upgraded shield tv to newer firmware 7.2

I upgraded the shield to the latest firmware and did not realize that it basically resets the whole thing to default. When I clicked on Plex it started it up like I was a new user and never used Plex before. I figured it would migrate over seamlessly; however, it did not. Is there a way to upgrade the firmware without having to manually input the locations of all my movie and TV libraries? It also did not save the history of movies and TV shows watched. Now I have to guess where I left off at. I find this to be very annoying and a time waster. Thank you.

Just upgraded my Pro… and had no problems with Plex… With over 5000 albums it better NOT reset my Plex server.

My upgrade to my Pro was normal, no changes to Plex.

Yeah I lost my PLEX Server on the NVIDIA Shield too after the 7.2 update. Noticed the PMS was turned off, turning it back did not help. Trying to see if can restore it now or if have to start from scratch. I couldn’t figure it out so had to reload it from scratch. I have 2 Shields so gonna hold off in upgrading it for now.

For those of you that this happened to, did you move the PMS data folder from its default in system partition on internal storage?

I did not move anything. I assume that the shield would have moved all the files it needed to my external hard drive I have attached. I formatted the drive using the shield.

Yeah, thinking those that do not have their PLEX data stored in the internal storage are going to be affected. If you have the room, I would move the PLEX data and all from adopted storage to Internal if possible before the upgrade. I will try this tomorrow and advise if it works or. It.

My PLEX data was in the adopted storage so thinking that was the cause of the issue.

Well citronboi said he did not move it so that may not be it.

I upgraded my other Shield and having worst problems than the 1st. Besides losing everything, can’t even see the option if it’s running or not in the Settings. You would think Nvidia takes these system upgrades with PLEX into account.

I tried to update to 7.2 this afternoon, and it… didn’t go well. The upgrade seemed to complete successfully, but when I opened the Plex app to put on a movie, the Shield became completely unresponsive (when I clicked to open a movie). After waiting for a few minutes with no change, I pulled the plug and plugged it back in, but the Shield wouldn’t restart at all (it got stuck on the Android boot animation). I ended up doing a factory reset, and I’m currently rebuilding my Plex server from scratch.

I haven’t reset my Shield since I got it a couple of years ago (it probably needed it), and I have another redundant Plex server in my house, so I’m not too broken up about it. It would be nice if there was a way to back up and restore a Shield PMS instance though…

Great now there’s another update to 7.2.1

It’s still broken with 7.2.1. While the server says it’s running, no client can see it. It also reset my media location from an external USB back to the internal storage.

I found a way to get into Developer options on the Shield and select Provide full system upgrades (Always install full system images instead of incremental images). Wonder if this would help prevent any PLEX issues after Shield upgrades? Has anyone done this prior to the 7.2 or 7.2.1 update and not break PLEX?

@Busaman_VA how did you do this - I’d be willing to check it out.

I’m currently on version 7.2.1 and avoiding the upgrade until I see there’s no more issues. I wish there was a way to get the Shield to not keep popping up the upgrade option because I can see myself accidentally hitting to upgrade option. Try the steps below @cptjsparrow7 and provide feedback.

  1. Goto Settings

  2. Go to About Nvidia Shield and select it

  3. Go down to Build and click on it 10 times or until it says you are in development mode

  4. Then go thru the options and select Provide Full System Upgrades.

Also found a way to not have the constant reminder show up on the home screen to where I might accidentally upgrade the shield when I don’t want to.
