You can’t upgrade PMS on the Shield from the autoupdate option in Web. You need to do it directly on the Shield through the Google Play Store app.
Hi there and thanks for your reply. Actually i tried doing that as well, i upgraded from Google Play and i got confirmation that upgrade had been completed. Turned shield off and on again, just in case. I then opened Plex and (1) at the settings the PMS still appears as 1.13.2.xxx (2) the server has been stopped and when trying to turn it on again, it won’t turn on and (3) the “upgrade” button on PMS is no longer available, it just says that i need to upgrade to the latest version… It’s a mess and i dont know what to do.
And i am afraid to delete the app and re-install it, because i will lose all my metadata…
Did you do that right after you saw the confirmation? If so, that might be the problem. Updating the app only updates the program, PMS still has to update it’s data. If you shut the Shield off while this was happening, it might have broken something. You might be stuck and have to start over from scratch. We can try a few things, but there is no simple fix if this is the case.
Thanks again. I might have, yes, because like i said before PMS is behaving erratically, with server not turning on, upgrade button not appearring etc…
Can you please go through some of the things i can try? And, if none of those work out, is there at least a way to salvage my metadata so i dont have to build my library from scratch?
Things to try
This DB file is where your library info is kept. If this is damaged, you are SOL. If it’s good, we can fix this.
Thank you!
I did what you said and i found more than one such files (though with different dates). I suppose you only need the .db file from 07Dec20, but i thought i’d send you all the files and you can disregard the ones you don’t need, or maybe the latest one is damaged and the ones from earlier dates are good.
NOTE: I just saw that i cant upload files larger than 30MBs. Each of the backup files is 46MBs. How do i send them to you??? Maybe a regular e-mail address?
Again, thanks very much for the assistance.
Its ok, i am just sending the latest ones! Let me know if you figure anything out.
Plex Backups 07Dec.rar (8.7 MB)
I’m not able to open that file. Can you resend it as a zip file?
Sure. Try this. (File removed)
Did you manage to open the zip files i sent you?
Thanks
I got the file and the database looks ok, so I’m not sure why PMS stopped working. You can try a fresh restart and then put back the appdata to see if that fixes it.
Thank you very much for the detailed information. I will try it and will revert if i have any questions. Just one last thing: instead of clearing the cache and app data, wouldnt it be simpler to just unistall and re-install the app, so that i have the latest version of it?
I don’t know if that’s simpler but sure that works too.
I’m getting this same issue. It’s saying it requires an update and I hit update and it just spins forever.
Edit: Nevermind. Going and updating in the app store worked. Didn’t realize that the media server and the Plex client were actually two separate apps because they present like they are one app. Still though…the update button the client presents you inside the app to update is broken apparently.
Hi. As i wrote above, i also went ahead and update through the app store and in my case i got the message that update has been completed, however when i went to the app in the settings it still showed the previous version of the app AND this time the “upgrade” button didn’t even appear, the server was stopped and couldnt get it back on and the whole thing was haywire.
Hi, same rotating upgrade icon, issue. The appstore doesn’t show an upgrade option. Only open or uninstall.
I upgraded shield, restarted, plugged off electricity even uninstalled the app and still the same issues.
Please help!
Ps. My desktop app via my smartphone still works and can stream to my shield
Had the exact same issue as u will see above.
I unistalled and then reinstalled plex and still nothing. I even SOFT/QUICK formatted my shield and again no result, i had the same problems.
In the end, i said “f**** it”, and decided to do a full format of my shield and started out clean, with a new updated plex. It took me a couple of hours to rescan my movies database and then spent another hour fixing some mismatched titles, but in the end i now have a plex that works.
I think plex should rethink and make backing up and restoring the metadata simpler…
I had the same update problem that the “Update” button never did anything. It finally hit that there are 2 apps in the Google Play store. The front end client app that you see and the back end server app behind the scenes.
The client app is telling you to update the server but the update button being presented is not functional. Going into the settings of the client app on the Shield device you will see the version of the client app in the bottom right of the screen (8.11.0.22186 as of 12/15/20). Scrolling down you will see the version of the media server running. (1.21.1.3830 after update 12/19/20).
Going into the Google Play Store on the Shield device you can install/uninstall the client app and also update/uninstall the server app. Scrolling to the bottom of the Play store you will see app categories with the client app under “Entertainment” and the server app under “Video Players & Editors”
This is just a basic primer which solved my problem.
Any new updates to fix this issue?i have tried updating my apps and even reinstalling which no success. I still get the spinning loading circleaafter you click update.
