Upgraded Synology to DSM 7 → Reinstalled Plex → error and no data moved over

Server Version#: 1.26.2.5797-7000
Player Version#: n/a

After the initial install and upgrade ■■■■ the bed (leaving me with no metadata, libraries, or settings of any kind migrated), I looked at these forums and followed some advice that I found.

I started over by giving liberal file permissions to the PlexMediaServer, erasing Plex, and reinstalling, hoping to trip a migration subroutine for all my old data and my libraries and custom info would be restored. No such luck. I got an error telling me to post here with my log files.

A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.
Please visit the forums and provide your logs, as described here.

Plex Media Server log.txt (675.0 KB)

I can help with recovering.

At this point, do you have –

  1. Your existing Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server folder with folders and files in it?

  2. Do you also see a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder with what looks like something in it (AppData/Plex Media Server) ?

Yes. These 2 directory trees exist:

  • PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/
  • Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/

The old one (/Plex/) is still completely populated with previous documents
The new one (/PlexMediaServer/) has folders and logs with creation times close to the time I re-installed Plex.

Requirement: The entire Plex share, and all contents – this is important, must grant Full Control (administrative, read, and write) permission to System Internal User PlexMediaServer

With this done,

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 app – choosing the Erase option.
  2. Now install 1.26.2.5797-7000 again.

It will either sit there “Installing” (which can take a long time) while it processes all the files and performs the migration

Installation time (process your DSM 6 metadata files and move them) is about 3 minutes per 1000 items you have indexed into PMS.

-or-

It will exit with instructions in the popup.
Follow those instructions as written.

For reference, I’ve provided detailed instructions with screenshots here:

I had to do this procedure 2x to get it to work, and I had to make sure the permissions were passed down to all subfolders and files.

But it WORKED!! Yay! many thanks!
