After carefully reading the official step-by-step instructions to upgrade to Synology DSM 7.0 and the DSM7 compatible Plex, I was quite confident it will work out OK, but have failed.
While in DSM 6, I’ve uninstalled the Plex package, and then upgraded to DSM 7.
After 2 reboots, I installed the DSM 7 compatible Plex package manually on the Synology DiskStation.
Yes, I understand the changes in the permissions and the use of the “Plex” folder, and have set it correctly - Customized full access for the old “Plex” shared folder, and R/W access for all folders with media and the new “PlexMediaServer” share.
Installation appeared to go as written in the step-by-step upgrade instructions and Plex Server is definitely marked as running on the Synology DiskStation.
However, when I open Plex form any client - Web, iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Mac application, it is unable to reach the server, all saying similar but different errors:
Mac Plex app: No content available - Check your network connection and verify that any media servers are online.
Web app: Not authorized - You do not have access to this server
Apple TV; No content from your pinned sources.
Minutes before the DSM upgrade, I have confirmed that it does connect and none of these errors came up.
I’ve searched everywhere but can’t find others that seem to have the same problem even after the permissions are set correctly. I’ve done everything step-by-step, and have no clue what else I could be missing. Help appreciated.
Server: Synology DiskStation DS718+
Server OS: DSM 7.0.1-42214
Server Version#: 1.24.2.4973-7000
On the sidebar, the old server is still listed, with all my libraries inaccessible with the “!” icon.
One thing that doesn’t feel right is that the new “PlexMediaServer” folder is quite small - only a few megabytes, as opposed to the old “Plex” folder that is 33GB in size.
One question before I get started: the option “Erase all of Plex Media Server from this system” says it’s “Not Recoverable”, and the description on the post says "No libraries or preferences will be retained."
What it says is a bit alarming. Does this mean at this point, there is no option except starting from scratch, and my customized library and metadata are lost forever?
I encountered a similar problem to @Yoshihide, and followed the recommended path (Plex token, etc). However…
I have two Synology NASs, both running Plex with separate sets of libraries (e.g. music & films on one, and TV shows and photos on the other). Let’s call them A and B. A upgraded correctly, and is now running DSM 7 and Plex quite happily. B appeared to upgrade in a similar fashion, but when I run Plex it shows the second set of libraries (all on B) as unavailable. Retrying the connection didn’t help. Looking at the original Plex folder on B, there is only one text file - Migration, and its contents would indicate that the migration completed correctly.
The Appdata folder in PlexMediaServer on A is over 5Gb with 32K files, while the same folder on B is only 6.5Mb with 131 files. This looks as if all my Plex metadata for B did not migrate correctly and has gone. I then tried to add a library on B and got the error message “Something went wrong/An unexpected error occurred”. I’m now stuck without the metadata and Plex not even letting me add a library on B. Thoughts?
I know this sounds bizarre, but is there any chance that the metadata from NAS B has incorrectly been migrated to PlexMediaServer on NAS A? How does Plex know about the libraries on A (which still exist), yet now show up as unavailable?
