Use Existing Metadata in Media File Over Plex Folder/File Naming Method

Currently, Plex uses an arcane folder and file naming convention to identify media types and gather metadata from external repositories.

This feature suggestion is to allow a user to specify to use the metadata in the media file as the primary mechanism to identify the media type (movie, tv show, etc) and only using the folder/file naming as a fallback.

I would propose to have this as an option in the Library settings. There is an option called “Prefer local metadata” but it doesn’t actually do what the name suggests and seemingly still ignores that metadata, at least for media type identification.

I only just noticed this suggestion.
You can already configure your libraries to prefer embedded metadata – with that option enabled, Plex will read available embedded metadata and use it over some online metadata.

If you’re experiencing some trouble with that, it might be worth to look into what specifically is going wrong. The feature itself is there and working for many users…
