Hey there, I’m creating this topic because of the note below on this page:
Note that this option is likely to be removed at some point in the future. If you do encounter an issue (using our regular/default player) with a specific item, we encourage you to post specific details about it in our friendly forums. That way, it can be investigated.
Ahead of visiting my parents for the holidays, they told me 4K content on Plex appears to have low frame rate and audio sync issues. Nothing egregious, but it was enough to slightly annoy. I use Infuse at home (back from the days when Plex on Apple TV couldn’t handle 4K MKVs or whatever the issue was) on the same device (Apple TV 4K) with no issues, so I had a hard time troubleshooting remotely.
I saw the issue first-hand while visiting and tried a bunch of stuff. Switching from Direct Play to Transcode fixed it but dropped HDR, and while I’m sure they wouldn’t notice, I didn’t really want to sacrifice quality or have them transcoding a bunch of stuff. I installed Infuse on their Apple TV and it worked as expected, without issues, just like mine at home. Seeing this Reddit post, I toggled on the old video player and it instantly fixed the frame rate and audio sync issues. Playback is now buttery smooth and looks just like Infuse.
Anyway, I don’t know what the technical differences are between the old and new players, but I do know the old player clearly has some sort of functionality or compatibility that allows this setup (that I would imagine is relatively standard) to function without playback issues. Since the knowledge base page asks to post about any issues with this setting as it may be decommissioned, figured I’d give it a shot as I’d hate for this fix to disappear one day.
Thanks, happy new year!
