Used the TVDB Season ID to force correct matching

Server Version#: Version 4.76.1

I’ve read the article “Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files” and endeavored to follow its advice closely, but cannot get the Plex TV Series agent to correctly identify my content. My content was ripped from a BD (that I own) and placed on my private ASUSTOR NAS server to be accessed via PLEX (for personal convenience). I’ve attached a screen shot that shows the folder and file naming used. I’ve used the TVDB Season ID (see https://thetvdb.com/series/firefly/seasons/dvd/1) to try and force correct matching, but it does not seem to work. What am I doing wrong?

Does the show not match or just the episode? If it’s just episodes, edit the shoe and change the episode ordering to “TheTVDB (DVD)”.

It is the episodes that don’t match. They are ordered on my NAS as on the DVDs, matching that specified by the TVDB ID I used (see link), but the Plex agent only finds the “Aired sequence” that is different and consequently applies the metadata corresponding to the aired sequence but linked to the episode as er the sequence of my files (e.g. s01e01 Serenity is played when you click on “The Train Job”). I tried renaming my files in the “Aired Sequence” (still specifying the DVD sequence ID) and they all matched perfectly, but were in an annoying sequence (e.g. the first pilot episode appears as episode 11, which I find quite annoying!). It appears to me that the Plex Agent ignores the TVDB ID entirely.

Sorry, we do not support the season ID numbers, only the show ID.

OK, but please elaborate … where do I find the show ID that matches the DVD sequence (as held on the TVDB)? And, how do I specify it?

I’m still puzzling over this … can you explain what you mean in this statement?

Since you have not yet responded and to keep any readers “in the loop”, I’ve taken the step of contact TVDB Support and suggesting/requesting that they consider treating the DVD release of this show as a separate “show” (with its own ShowID) rather than as a separate “season” (which it is clearly not!). If they comply, that would alleviate this mismatch problem.

This is an unusual situation where a dispute with the Studio delayed the airing (and screen format) of the original pilot and therefore the Aired sequence. The subsequent DVD release corrected both the episode sequence (to make it more sensible) and the format (though filmed in widescreen format, the earlier episodes were aired at a 4:3 ratio). Clearly, fans would prefer the DVD sequencing and format.

There is a setting at the library level that tells the library to use a specific episode ordering. The default is to follow “TheMovieDB”. Using Plex Web, hover over your library, click on the … to the right, select managed library, then edit. Go to the “advanced” tab and scroll down a little. You’ll see this setting. In 99% of shows, this works just fine. Firefly is that 1% and is known about.

If you edit a TV show, you will see this same setting. The default is to follow the library. You can change this to “TheTVDB (DVD)”. This will use the DVD ordering, which is what you want.

You can’t. you need to manually edit the show and select the order after it was added as mentioned. There is no special naming to pick up DVD order automatically,

Thanks both of you … I’ve done that it worked fine … all good. Thanks again.
