Server Version#: 1.43.0.10492
Howdy all..long time PMS user here…and every few years, I’ve moved my install to a new drive with no issues. But when I did it today, all my users did not have access to my libraries and I had to manually re-enable them. I copied the folders and registry settings as described here.
This happened last year also when I upgraded all my hw, and didnt think anything of it…but I had to reinstall windows today due to malware, and it happened again. To be clear, all my users were still under the library access section, but all had their individual library access removed. I simply had to reshare the libraries and all was good, except all watch history is lost.
Is there a missing step somewhere since the procedure is from before the new friend structure?
Your friends access to your server is tied to your server ID that is in your registry. So if you didn’t backup on your old machine and restore your registry data on your new machine then that might explain it.
If you mean the 2 registry entries in the procedure, I did back those up and reimport.
Could it be there needs to be a specific sequence to the reinstall, startup, copying of folder and registry import? Like copying over the files before reinstall and starting up PMS for first time?
Like I mentioned, all my users were there, I only needed to reshare my libraries.
Just following up…should PMS be reinstalled and db restored PRIOR to importing the backed up registry keys?
It shouldn’t matter. The registry keys are not added until PMS is started.
You could start PMS from a fresh install to confirm everything is working, then stop PMS, move your old DB where it needs to go, delete the Plex Media Server registry directory, then restore the registry from your exported backup, and start PMS.
You could just as easy, restore the registry and then install PMS. That should work too.
One thing to keep in mind. When you create a backup (right click on Plex Media Server directory and select Export) of your registry, it will only write those keys/values. Any unique key/value that were there before will remain. Which is why I mentioned deleting the Plex Media Server registry directory.
