Users outside of network are always at 720p even though Remote access is enabled

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252

Hello all,

my apologies if this has been discussed (or beaten to death at that). Please direct me to the correct place if so.

I have quite a few users on my server that are not tech savvy, and they will watch things as they are provided to them through PMS. Some of them have questioned why the video quality aren’t as good as on other streaming services that comes with their TV. This made me realized that those users who do not make any changes to their PMP device settings in terms of quality will always be stuck at 720p 2mbps.

I did some digging on why this might happen, and saw somewhere in a Plex article explaining that this will happen if I don’t have remote access set up and Plex is relaying the connection for me to my users. However, I already have remote access set up on PMS and it works perfectly fine (at least I think it is), so shouldn’t that allow users to access the full quality? I’ve also tried setting automatic quality or just to Original/Maximum quality, and this doesn’t seem to matter.

Do users still have to manually change their maximum quality on their PMP device to be able to access the full quality of the videos from my PMS? As mentioned above, many of them are not tech savvy enough to understand this, and me guiding each of them through each of their devices will be a huge endeavor for me.

There’s got to be a way to force end users’ devices to access the full quality. Network speed isn’t a problem for them, this much I know. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

the short answer is, yes, they do.

can plex change the default from 4m/720 ?

yes, they could.

will they? who knows.

Lol, this is what I was worried. It seems I need to try and figure out a way to help them change the quality on their PMP devices without giving myself a stroke from it.

But I really hope that Plex will increase the default quality limit to at least 1080p 8mbps, especially if it’s via remote access and not relayed through their servers. I mean come on, this is 2020. Internet speeds are decently fast, most PMS are powerful enough to handle 1080p stream or adjust automatically. There’s no reason for 720p to still be a thing.

some people make a video explaining how, only share that video until they fix their client

here’s a thread with a plex employee in there essentially saying they’ve always done it that way, without further direction or resolution on the topic.

Hey @deactivated you still around?

Now THAT is both evil and effective.
I LOVE it.

The trouble is my ‘Guests’ can’t make heads or tails of the settings or the video - so I just ride the 400 mile round trip and do it myself.

If Plex had to do a 400 mile round trip ‘The Fix’ would have happened long ago, but since it’s just a ‘User Issue’ - no biggie. User Suffering in no way constitutes a crisis for Plex.

Guests - as far as Plex is concerned - run the transcoder.
That’s what it’s there for.
