Using 2+ Homerun Primes

I just picked up an additional Homerun Prime and a Connect. I Don’t yet have the antenna so I can’t try the connect but I got the second Prime fired up and recognized in Plex. My question is, is there anything else I need to do? What prompts the question is when I had 3 recordings active as a test I tried to manually start a 4th. I got the conflict recordings screen as if the 3 new tuners were not actually recognized in Plex. I have yet to see any activity on the new Prime.

I have two Connects. So far, the third recording is getting errors.

But, DVR is in its infancy with Plex. So, I expect they will get it going with multiples soon. Well, I hope so, because I have a third on the way.

This is what I think too. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

What do you mean the 3rd is getting errors? The 3rd tuner on the one connect you are actively using? Are you transcoding? I haven’t noticed any errors specifically associated with the 3rd tuner on mine. (I don’t use the transcode option, I do it later) There have been lots of problems but nothing I can say specific to the 3rd. Maybe you have a network or server bottleneck… Are all your switches and NICs gigabit? Bad Ethernet cable to the tuner or server?

I have 2 Connects and a Prime configured in Plex. When I saw this post I tried to schedule recordings on all 7 tuners. I could get recordings started using both tuners on each Connect so 4 recordings on the Connects, and then one recording on one tuner of the Prime for a total of 5 recordings. If I tried to schedule a 6th recording on the Prime I got an error in the recording schedule. I know all 3 tuners on the Prime can record as it was my first device used until recently when I moved it to the last device since I get better reception with the Connects. I have also had 6 or 7 recordings going at once when I first started with Plex back in December with previous versions. I may go back and try this again over the weekend after updating to the latest Plex Server 1.7.3. Have about 12 hours with no recordings scheduled so plan on upgrading during that time and could try some testing of all 7 tuners. May even feel a little froggy and hook my Dual back up and try 9 recordings.

All of my connections are gigabit from server to 5 port gigabit switch by my computer, then from switch to both Connects and Dual that sit on my desk. Also gigabit connection from the 5 port switch to a 24 port gigabit switch in my wiring closet downstairs where the Prime is connected where my Cable for Internet comes into the house.

The Connect has two tuners. So my third recording would go to the second Connect. Currently, that is my error point.

I am not transcoding. Have that setup for after with MCEBuddy.

All of my connections are gigabit (well, the Connects are not). But, switches and server are.

I’ll dig into the logs when I have more time.

On and AMD Phenom II X6 1035T @2.59GHz that measures a little over 4k passmark score and 32GB memory. OS is Windows 10 Pro 64bit. Storage is using Storage Spaces of four 3TB drives in a Two Way Mirror.

So this is odd, I just compared the DVR device screen in Plex where the Homerun devices are listed and there seems to be something odd going on. According to Plex the tuner in use is x.x.x.169 but when I go to both of the tuner status screens direct from the Homeruns it tells me the opposite, that .169 is idle and that .214 has 3 active streams… I think we may be on to something here. Ideas or comments???

It seems that the new tuner is doing all the work and the existing is idle. So I guess we know the new one is working so that’s not the issue.

It’s odd and extremely frustrating. I had purchased 1 HD Homerun Prime to give it a try and then planning on adding 2 more - I’m coming from a Roamio Pro (6 tuners) and I often had all 6 going during the fall so felt 3 extra would be nice so that I could extend programs by a minute and not worry about clipping.

So I go and setup them up yesterday and last night was the first night that I had 4 shows recording at once. One failed and only recorded the last hour and not the first hour. So . . .it only recorded 3 programs at once! Didn’t think to test it out and after a bunch of tests today I’m noticing what you are seeing

Here are the details - I have screen caps to back this up as well.
2 Primes added of the 3 - ip 240 listed first and .92 listed second (3rd not added is .105)
.240 is listed in the Plex DVR as using all 3 tuners
.92 is listed as using 1

According to the HD HomeRun config
.240 is not using any tuners!!
.92 is using all 3
.105 is using 1

How it’s finding .105 I have no idea . . . I’m pretty sure I had not added that (during this test of many) and had started the dvr from scratch.

So it’s not picking up the right device when telling them to record . . .

and if I try and record a 5th show it fails for some reason

I’m also sure I can duplicate this as I’ve spent a good part of the day trying to figure out what is going on. I’m on 1.7.3.3937 and wondering if I should drop back a version or two to see what happens.

In Microsoft Media Center, as I recall, there was a limit of 4 tuners of a kind. So one could natively have:

4x NTSC
4x ATSC
4x QAM
4x CableCard
4x DVB-T

And one could extend that if they used a utility like tuner salad.

So the question would seem to be is the phenomena you are seeing with your tuners in Plex DVR a bug or a feature?

IMO it makes sense that there would be some limitations with respect to the number of tuners one can have configured in Plex DVR. What are those limits though,…?

For what it’s worth, I’ve seen “Storage Spaces” go bad several times on a number of different occasions. I’d highly recommend some kind of backup solution if you don’t have one already or move to a more resilient storage option,…or both.

Assuming the data is worth anything to you that is.

Thanks for that.

Yes, I do have everything backed up as well.

Well . . if there are limits they should be published - not just have an add a device with no info letting us find out thru trail and error that you can only have 4.

but there is also the issue of it using a tuner that isn’t added to Plex - that has to be a bug.

I also have to think this is a bug as Tivo (I know - apples and oranges) has a 6 tuner and Plex is looking to pull away from TiVo and become the one stop shop for all of you media needs.

I am getting the feeling that the tuner’s themselves are designed to negotiate and allocate the individual tuners out. Maybe there is a conflict because Plex is trying to do the same and they are stepping on each others feet…??? Soon enough they will get it together and fix it.

I just realized that my Samsung TV detects the tuners on the network and without an ounce of configuration had a tuner stream playing on the TV directly. Just an FYI…

Good thing for the new line of 10tb drives… lol. It seems that 1 TB isn’t what it used to be!

Indeed, fresh install of Windows 7 (and WMC) only recognize 4 tuners. OEM Ceton include a tool to increase the tuner limit recognized by WMC. I have a Ceton PCI 6 tuner installed/in use right now. But I have also used successfully my 6 tuner PCI AND a Ceton 6 tuner ETH combined. 12 tuners were overkill. I am VERY happy with my 6 tuners in one device.

Yeah I have two LG 4K Smart TV’s that can see the HDHomeRun Prime units on the network and stream directly from it for most channels. Its clunky but ti works.

Damn, you are tuner rich!

I guess I shouldn’t be in a rush to get an antenna for my connect… 2 more tuners that I can’t or might not be able to use for a bit. I think I have the antenna narrowed down that suits the bill. 99% of the towers are within a 180 degree field. My buddy that lives a few miles away just picked up an amplified omni and said he can get 38 stations. That sounds promising. Maybe I’ll branch this off to a new topic when I get the gear.

And as for the “tuner rich” comment… Things are changing very quickly for some of us. To have a dozen tuners is not very impressive if the system is used by an entire family or group. 6 DVRs plus 6 live streams or however you want to break it down, available for 5-20 users means simply not having to wait for someone to get off so you can use it or not failing to record your favorite show’s premiere season episode because 10 other shows just kicked off and everyone is booking the DVR. I also archive news, so there is a solid 2-5 tuners frequently in use.

I’m not rich, I bought it on credit!

The 12 tuners are amazing simply as a number available. Though fall lineups often can be a frenzy to record, I have found 6 are generally enough. However, once you add kids, spouse, etc and 6 really won’t keep everyone happy. I am watching auctions on eBay for the ethernet version of Ceton 6 tuners. If I can get one for a steal, I’m all in. (As for PLEX working with Ceton tuners, under my W7 system, EACH tuner can be shared on the network. So there really must be some way to get PLEX to work with it.)

Now have my third Connect. So, six tuners. Just have not had time to play with it yet. We’ll see over the weekend.
