Now have my third Connect. So, six tuners. Just have not had time to play with it yet. We’ll see over the weekend.
The issue with HDHR is how much it ultimately will cost. To get SIX tuners, you need 2 Prime’s or 3 connects. Since cable in my area (NYC on Verizon) essentially REQUIRES decryption on 95% of ANY channel, cable card is necessary.
So back to 2 Prime units. Roughly $200 (for used) and approaching $300 both new. Then you need to rent TWO cable cards. (Verizon doesn’t give the first free like some other companies do/used to). So that’s additional per month costs as well. You also need TWO network connections AND COAX drops for both Prime’s. Contrast to a SINGLE Ceton PCI or ETH depending on setup with ONE NIC connection, ONE cable card.
Getting the “same” number of tuners with SiliconDust equipment is much MORE expensive outright and over the long run.
As we were talking about having 12 tuners (aka 2x Ceton 6 tuners). How much would that cost with SiliconDust? Not even WORTH the effort to add up. Having to now factor in electric costs for all those boxes, COAX drops, and network connections.
Ceton’s 6 tuner IS the only option cost wise.
@robwhitey
I get ya. Sometimes it is about fun and messing with stuff and not all cost
But, real quick. One network drop to where your cable is going to split and a GB switch. Coax drops are the one with a splitter and a couple short cables.
But, clearly the expense is in the devices. Not really in the outlying pieces.
For me, I am on AT&T uVerse. So, zero option for cable card or anything else unless they’ll support capture cards with IR blaster as opposed to tuner cards.
So, I went with the Connects. All in one spot. Split one antenna. Located where I have already ran a network cable with a switch.
Didn’t realize they did refurb Connects when I bought the first. But, got the last two for the same price as the first one. So, that helps a bit.
Will I be able to cut the cord? Probably not with some of the ‘required’ channels for the wife. Which then takes me back to more about having fun messing with stuff
The other thing about the HDHR stuff of the Ceton is other devices can HDHR. Many TVs can use those tuners. Sadly, my 2012 Samsung no longer can. And, other computers (unlike only the one Ceton is plugged into).
Oh, just looked and saw that Ceton also does network tuner now. Way back when I looked at them, it was PCI only I think. Which, is why I went with SD devices.
What I am curious about @JeffCrum is how well PLEX mixes (displays AND records) say a Connect and a Prime? If you get good OTA signal, using those 2 tuners for “regular” channels and the Prime for all the “cable” channel recording.
Again, for my usage (in simplicity sake), a single Ceton 6 tuner gives decent breathing room. Also, the Ceton’s can be setup WITHOUT the cable card inserted. But that would ONLY work if the cable provider sends most/all non-premium channels via QAM. That is NOT the case for Verizon FiOS in NYC. There may have been a time, a good portion of regular channels were tunable without a box. But those days are gone. (I recently tested several QAM tuners at 2 locations, and you get a TINY fraction of regular channels. They basically are broadcast channels and shopping. That is it.
Ceton 6 tuner had network tuner (sharing) back when I bought it in 2012. I never used the feature since I never had a need. I tried to split them, but W10 won’t work with them at all (known issue) but I was hoping.

Soon enough I’ll know what happens with a mix of cable and OTA tuners. I have a feeling that it’s not ready yet considering more than 1 Connect ■■■■■ the bed and that is just adding to the quantity of the same type. We just need to have patience and contribute where we can.
I currently have a Dual, Prime, and 2 Connects available. I had a Plex Employee tell me in another post that the Prime and Connects would not work together because of different guides/channels. Didn’t seem to matter to the Plex Employee that I wasn’t using the Prime for cable channels, only local channels rebroadcast by cable company and for that purpose it was working perfectly. But yes, if you have a Prime with Cable TV and a Connect in your DVR there can only be one guide so you will need to choose whether the guide will be the cable or OTA. If I was using the Prime for cable then I would be without roughly 16-18 of the local channels available OTA that the cable company does not rebroadcast. Hopefully Plex will allow the DVR configuration to have multiple DVR’s in the future so someone could have a Prime configured with cable channels in one DVR an Connects, Dual, Extends configured in a second DVR with OTA guide.
As of now, Plex will record using the two tuners of one Connect (the first one added). the other four tuners (two more connects) get ‘unknown error’. I have not had a chance to get into the logs.

So it’s the same game with the prime. Can’t get past the first device. 2+ are inaccessible. I tried kicking it and naming it, neither worked. For clarity, I have only the 3 tuners from one prime working.
Let’s be realistic, a modern home with spouses and children will NOT tolerate a single 3 tuner Prime. I suppose if someone was using it as their personal recorded it would work, but once ppl start to see the savings (over boxes and DVR fees), many will want multiple tuners. And again, why the Ceton is clearly superior sitting at 6! But it seems most have given up on Ceton (and to be fair the manufacturer seems to have too). It’s still early so it’s possible, maybe, but if 2 or more Primes cannot work properly then having the feature is not practical in an active home. A single person, possible, certainly not 2 parents + 2 kids.
I too have seen some issues with my 2 connects. This is apparently a new issue introduced recently that will hopefully be fixed in a future update. I know when I first started with Plex DVR back in December I would have 6 or 7 shows recording at once with my Prime and 2 Connects. So the multiple devices was working correctly at one point.
Yeah, It’s really like 1 Prime per person. Maybe less if there are other sources of content.
I just had to restart the Plex Server. The schedule was stuck on yesterday… yeah, very odd and the EPG froze at 0% on a manual update. Maybe an update will be released soon.
I recently jumped into the Plex DVR using 2 x HDHomerun Prime tuners that should give me the ability to record 6 x channels at the same time. So far I have had nothing but problems with Plex and Silicondust apps. According to my tuners I should have 230 channels however when I attempted to record a program another program show up. Not sure how to fix this issue. Also I would like to filter the channels I have to look at and posted a question on how to perform this task and was directed to the DVR Setting section and select the the little gear icon. All that I able to do is select how video is converted while recording. The only method I have found that works is to delete the device and re-install which then allows selection of channels. This is a very time consuming process and needs to correct by Plex.
I am currently with DirtecTV and will stay with them until Plex and Siliconedust get their act together.

We feel your pain but please don’t forget the fact that the DVR is in beta. And yes, don’t plan on canceling your main TV provider anytime soon. There is still a lot to be done.

In the DVR settings, for the tuner, there is a line that says ‘xx channels – yy enabled’. the ‘enabled’ part is a link. Click that. It brings up a list for that tuner that you can check and uncheck.
I have 2 HDHomeRun Primes connected. When I tried to play live tv on the 4th client - it would not do it. It used all 3 tuners from one of the HD HomeRunPrimes but would not use any of the available tuners from the other unit. No other recordings were scheduled during that time.
Later on I noticed that a recording that I had schedule used one of the tuners on the second unit - which was the first time I had seen that second unit’s tuner’s used at all. Wonder if it is allocating one unit for recording and the other unit for live tv watching…would not think it would act that way. So probably just coincidence. Would hope that they get it so that all tuners can be used for live/recording.
Ideally it should act like Tivo does - if you try to watch live TV on a mini for example - and no tuner is available it tells you and I think offers to cancel one of the recordings in progress.

So you had 6 or 7 running at once? That’s good news as this is a really annoying issue not being able to use multiple tuners right now.
I’m about to start backing down my Plex version until I can get a couple of tuners running I think . . . will attempt that this afternoon. I moved my Plex server to a different computer over the weekend and I used to be able to get 4 of the 9 recording but now I can only get 3 and that’s an issue.
Yes, I did. Latest versions won’t use/record more than one device tuners. Luckily I only have typically 2 shows schefuled at a time now. If this was Fall Primetime I would be pissed and probably setting up Plex on every computer I have with one tuner device added to each computer with different shows each would be set to record.
lol Yeah been thinking about that too but hadn’t researched if you could have multiple Plex installs on one account or were you going to use multiple accounts?
Thanks for confirming that you had more then one tuner working at once as yeah - the only reason I’m not pissed is it’s summer lol.
You can have multiple servers under your one account.

As a further update - I tried recording 4 shows at once from stuff that was currently being aired - and was able to get the first three set up no problem - but the 4th one gets the warning triangle and shows unknown error.
