Using Plex to view content on an offline drive

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.77.4

Hi all, I’m interested if there’s an option to view my content on an offline drive using the Plex interface. For example, I would love to be able to load a bunch of movies/ other content on a thumbdrive, take it to a friend’s house, plug it into their TV/laptop, and be able to view the content list using the Plex UI rather than scrolling through vague files/folders. Playback could be through some other player, I’m just interested in getting the metadata displayed in a friendly way.

The friend may or may not use Plex themselves, and ideally they wouldn’t have to download or install anything; it would just be a matter of plugging in the storage device and opening the browser or perhaps even a static page with Plex.

I could very well be missing an obvious solution here, or completely missing the point of how this system works. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Plex is not designed for that. The only way I can think is to use a mobile Android device (phone or tablet). This has an option to view media stored directly on the device and present it with the Plex UI. You can then use an hdmi cable (if the device supports it) to display on a TV.

Hi MovieFan, thanks for the thoughts, it’s as I suspected. I don’t use Android currently but if that changes I’ll explore your suggestion…
