I am a music lover. Since Roon costs so much and Audirvana is too sluggish on my hardware, plus neither provides payment options in local currency, I’ve decided to look into Plex and realized I’ve never considered PlexAmp before. So, I’ve given it a try, loved it, and finally become a lifetime PlexPass owner.
However, since I have a large library (in FLAC), sonic analysis is taking ages. Can I safely use Plexamp while sonic analysis is going on or should I wait till it completes?
Should be no problem, if your server has at least some minimum power.
Plexamp usually precaches data aggressively, so you should only see some more lag when browsing the library or when requesting transcoded files (usually remotely).
You can also opt to only perform sonic analysis during the server maintenance period.
Which you should set to run during hours when you are not typically using your server.
I am not concerned with lags. My concern was to play an album while it was being analyzed by Plex. I was afraid to corrupt the database somehow. I had a bad case of db corruption after a year’s use on Roon (one of the reasons I’ve defected to PlexAmp) but I know Roon uses a different db system.
Another concern: Will Plex wake the system from sleep to perform a server maintenance? I’m using a Mac with Power Nap enabled.
PS: For the curious, @ChuckPa has kindly provided an answer for this, saying:
“PMS doesn’t wake up the host because it doesn’t have that level of privilege in the host operating system. (Some systems have self-wake on a timer capability. Plex isn’t that privileged).”
