Using plex with Satellite Internet

Hi. I’m going to be moving to an area of rural Kentucky that doesn’t have wide access to cable or DSL services. At the moment, satellite is my only option. Typically I use plex within my own home, but I do enjoy streaming when I’m away on trips.

My question is, if I have HughesNet or something similar, with a 50gb datacap - would it be feasible to stream from outside my home? I would use my home network at home, so that shouldn’t affect data usage much. I’m fairly unfamiliar with satellite internet, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Satellite internet is typically very slow upload speeds and latency is very high.
I would not count on being able to do much with that for remote access.

However if you did get a plex pass you could use the sync option where you can download/sync content to mobile devices to view on the go.

Thank you for your response. Yea I was afraid the upload speed would be horrible and this confirms my suspicion.

Also, if I have a wifi network set up in my home, does Plex doesn’t use bandwidth that would affect my data cap would it? Wouldn’t plex automatically use it as a home network?

Yes local streaming setup properly should stay local and not traverse the internet and not count towards your internet cap usage.

Do I have to do anything special to assure that?

Most basic setups should work out f the box as you intend.

If you have a non standard network setup like multiple vlans/subnets or something you just want to make sure you populate this as needed but for most people this is not needed.
