VERY Disappointed in DVR Functionality/Reliability

So today I finally got a chance to do something with the DVR. I decided to record the Indy 500 and it was a mess. I wanted to watch it live in addition to recording it so that I could let it record for about 45 minutes and then basically bump through commercials.

Well, it recorded entirely fine. The problem was that I was completely unable to replay it while it was recording. First, the transport controls for it are just lousy. Sorry, they just are. Nearly every other device uses the standard transport controls, but not Plex. doesn’t just FF, it has to move the progress bar and that just isn’t clear on what’s going on. It needs an option to record thumbnails and work like a standard DVR. So then I’d hit Play and NOTHING would happen. It would just get stuck between Play and Pause. I’d quit and come back and choose to play where I’d left off and all it would ever do is sit dead on that same frame. If I tried to watch it live it would also just show the first frame it found at that moment and then sit there on that single frame forever.

Also annoying was that this 5.1 content was claiming to only be recording in stereo and it’s pretty clear from the playback after the show that it did just record audio.

This is with the HAUPPAUGE WinTV-DualHD recommended USB tuner.

As is, this setup just isn’t reliable for me. Have I set it up incorrectly, or is this some sort of bug?

Nothing? Well, that’s even more disappointing… I guess this feature just isn’t ready for prime time yet.

Check out this thread in the forums, Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing) The DVR is good at recording a show then watching after it’s finished, other than that it’s terrible. Give Emby a try, it allows you to watch in progress recordings, the only thing Emby is missing is resuming from where you left off when watching an in progress recording, but Emby says it’s a feature they want to add in the future. The people at Emby actually reply to posts in their forum, not so much with Plex.

Thanks. MUCH appreciated. It helps to know I’m not alone. This is shocking that Plex management hasn’t made this a priority. Tried Emby once and it wasn’t my cup of tea, but may go down that path again.

Just do a forum search for “timeshift” in the forums and you’ll see that you are not alone. @elan and the Plex Team have not been able to resolve this issue for a very long time. This is why we are now using Emby for Live TV and DVR. Emby has Plex beat in this category.
