Very strange Plex problems (Unraid) - Looking for Servers

Server Version#: 1.15.3.876
Player Version#: not sure

This will take some time to explain.

I have an unraid server and plex running in a container. I have recently upgraded the Cache drive, parity drive and added the old parity drive into the unraid pool. All these moves required some backup/restoration but everything appeared to come back online ok.

I recently had a breach of trust with my nephew when he stayed over the other night and as a result, I have installed a firewall/UTM to give more control over when he has access to the web and what he is looking at. I don’t know if this detail is relevant, just another data point.

We are a couple of days past the time I made all the changes to the unraid infrastructure, there have been a few strange challenges. I did not make any changes the the container profile, but I’m thinking something strange is going on with file/path/permissions.

I have four local users configured in the plex server. Admin is one of the four. I noticed last night when I was logging onto my user profile, I couldn’t see any of the views I typically see. I couldn’t go into all shows view and select what I wanted. The only view I could see when I selected ALL libraries was “Continue Watching”, “On Deck” and “Recently Added XYZ”. I went into the ADMIN account and everything looked fine. I watched what I wanted to watch and all was good. This morning, I decided to do a little more troubleshooting.

Admin account still works, all other accounts behave similarly. I deleted my user account and added a new one and mapped to the libraries I usually see, when I select OK to create this account and go to the home page, it stays at “Looking for servers” forever. I switch back to my kids account and remap (select/unselect) and the account still has the issue above with the “Continue watching” “On deck” etc… I can go into any of the shows/movies in the continue watching/on deck and they function fine.

I am thinking its permission related as a result of all the moving around.

Here is what I tried

  1. Redeploy the plex server in unraid
  2. Force update on plex server in unraid
  3. Add new user (looking for servers)
  4. Tested outside of the network (over 4g) and see similar issues, but its still working. I don’t think its anything with the new UTM I had installed.
  5. Rebooted unraid
  6. Verified unraid’s network settings are pointing to the correct gateway (stab in the dark)
  7. As I’m testing all of this, I was switching back and forth to various profiles and I switch to back to the admin profile and get “looking for servers”. I completely shut the window and relaunched the plex webUI and that problem for ADMIN account (only) disappeared
  8. Clicked Optimize Database, no change
  9. Click clean bundles, no change
  10. tested sab/sonarr, works fine. The episode i tested comes up in plex under the admin account, all normal there.

I’m at a loss. Outside of completely blowing away Plex on unraid, is there anything else I can test? Let me know if logs would help.

any help?

have you tried going into “tools” and then running the “docker safe new perms”

I’ll do that now! THanks for the idea!

It seems to be a problem with permissions. I’ll report back in shortly.

I don’t see docker safe new perms. I do see “new permissions”. Is that the same thing?

I think it might be a drive problem. I just lost access to my cache drive. I see the directory structure is there but no files. I haven’t ran the permissions tool yet.

I can try to the drive out with the old one and see what happens.

it is not new permissions that is something different.
What version of unraid are you running?
I am on 6.7.0 rc7

Your cache drive could have run the mover which would have taken everything off of the drive unless you have one of the shares set to always stay on the cache.

**edit for spelling

I replaced the drive. Everything appears to be OK for now. I think it was a DOA cache drive.

I’ll post up here if anything else unfolds.

I am running 6.6.7, latest stable.

I’m going to stay at this OS level until something breaks.

I do have a lot of shares set to cache only. appdata, plex, system, domains etc…
