Hi
Quite new to plex so apologies if this is posted in the wrong place
Got a mac running latest version of plex server.
I have a bunch of music videos files. From a Windows and iMac perspective they are stored in top level folder (called music videos). In music videos folder there are some individual music video files, and some further sub-folders with videos in.
In Plex I created a library called “music videos” and pointed it to the top level folder (music videos) to scan for media.
They all get scanned into the library on my plex server but instead of retaining them in any folder structure they are flattened out into one single library of all the videos
That being said… that’s not necessarily the main/central use case for Plex. With Plex, it’s (almost) all about organizing your media based on its metadata – e.g. allowing you to filter by artist/actor/director, year/decade, genre, your / critic rating, content rating… down to technical details such as what audio/subtitle tracks are available for a video.
No more messing with folders where you apply a static structure to a video that could also be organized using a different aspect (e.g. folders based on artists vs. other categories).
I prefer folder view because most (not all) of the videos came in and the metadata was incorrect. I have some 14000 music tracks. A large proportion of those came in with “wrong” metadata. So whilst metadata approach is good, its going to take I don’t know how long to check all the metadata and details for each file to ensure it’s the same and then check that it got scanned into Plex correctly. You then seem to have to edit the metadata again manually in the Plex database. I have tried a small number of files manually ensuring all the actual disk file metadata is correct and then re-scan the folder but plex didn’t seem to over-write what was already there. Any thoughts on that?
