I’ve had a problem for many months now but never bothered to dig more deeply into it. I’ve had a Plex server on RedHat for at least a couple years now, and after a recording is completed, Plex has always generated the video preview thumbnails. That is, until these last few months.
After the recording completes, I have a post script which runs the video through handbrake. I’ve had this in place for the couple years I’ve had Plex running. But just to check, I remove the post-processing script, and still, no preview thumbnails are generated.
My nightly scheduled tasks run each evening at 10PM, and for newly recorded shows which didn’t have thumbnails created after they were recorded, the thumbnails are present a day later. That’s not all that much help, though, as my main complaint is that each evening’s Evening News is what I’m looking for thumbnails for, and I watch it on the day on which it was recorded, not a day or two later.
Preview thumbnail generation does work fine for media which I add to the library manually, such as movies I pull from my DVD collection. Upon adding the media, Plex notices it and generates thumbnails immediately. Works perfectly.
For the issue I’m currently having, if I move the file (Evening News, for example) out of the library, re-scan the library (so the program is deleted from the library), then place the file back in the library, it is immediately detected, and Plex produces the thumbnails within seconds.
I’ve reviewed all the settings I can find regarding the preview thumbnails, and they’re all set as I believe they should be. Any other suggestions to try?
