Video with DTS/DCA audio not playing on PMP on Windows, but playing on Plex app

Hello there!

I recently upgraded all my home gear for streaming choosing to run Plex Server on my Synology NAS and Plex Player on Windows.

My topology is:
Win 10 machine connected via HDMI to HDMI 1 of:

  • LG C1 4K TV connected via HDMI 2 eARC to:
    • Yamaha RX-A4A receiver connected to bunches of speakers

Win 10 machine is running Plex Media Player and classic Plex app.

Recently, I encountered a strange behavior while playing one of the videos I have (Good Omens TV show). The video is H264 AVC1, and audio is DTS Audio.

The video and audio plays just as well when using Plex app on the media PC connected to TV
The video plays but audio shows “audio not supported” when using Plex Media Player on the media PC connected to TV.
The video and audio play just fine when using VLC on the same machine.
The video and audio play well using Plex Media Player on another machine (laptop connected to two stereo speakers)

What could be going on, please?

A note of interest, the “Audio is Not Supported” pops up in a white font on gray background on my TV and upon some thought I think it is coming from my TV, not from Plex Media Player. Clearly something to do with eARC.
PMP of has all the audio turned on to passthrough.
TV has the eARC set to bitstream

The LG C1 does not support passthrough for dts audio formats (rtings.com review).

Deselect dts and dts-HD audio in Plex Media Player.

Alternately, try Plex HTPC. Plex HTPC will eventually replace Plex Media Player, which is no longer being developed (last updated May 2020). You may still have to deselect dts in Plex HTPC.

Additional notes:

You could also connect the PC directly to the receiver. That takes any TV restrictions out of the equation.

The Plex PC/Mac client apps play HDR10 media but tonemap it to SDR. If you want HDR output, use the Plex LG app or a streaming box such as an Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon FireStick 4K, etc.

To modify audio formats in Plex Media Player:

  1. If in Desktop mode, switch to TV mode.
Click on the TV button in upper right part of screen.
  2. Select your username.
  3. Settings → Audio → Device Type = HDMI.
Audio formats should now be visible. Select which ones you wish to passthrough.

Note 1: You may have to use arrow & enter keys for navigation/selection in some sections of Plex Media Player.

Note 2: Settings/navigation in Plex HTPC is very similar to Plex Media Player.

Hello there,

What an incredibly useful response. I really appreciate it!

I was unaware of Plex HTPC. It isn’t listed on the Downloads site.

I installed Plex HTPC and it works flawlessy, the DTS Audio is coming through without any challenges or deselection, the HDR works! (Plex Media Player went off HDR when full screen), and my Flirc remote control programming works the same way as before, and the phone app continues to control the HTPC like it did PMP.

Thank you so much for great software!
