Video with subtitles dont work after getting plex pass

I bought a Plex pass today and since then, any content i try to play where i have subtitles on just loads forever. I cant figure it out. If i just disable the subtitles it loads normally and plays.

Any idea what might be causing this? Im using plex on a Synology NAS.

On what clients are you experiencing this?
Sometimes it can help to reboot the server or to sign out / back into the app if there’s issues linked to activating the Plex Pass.

I did reboot my NAS but that didn’t help. It’s happening on both of my TVs (vizio and samsung) and also via mobile on Android

Did you enable hardware transcoding? The synology nas is… kind of notorious for not liking having to burn subtitles in while also doing HW transcoding. I had a nice long back and forth about that a few months back. While they never did claim to find a problem to fix (no patches later that addressed this issue), they did have a workaround using a different VAAPI HW transcoder driver, which for me made my NAS do subtitle transcoding much better than it did before the change.

Try what ChuckPa suggests here: Plex Server cannot handle transcoding with subtitles - #51 by ChuckPa

I’m so confused. Adding VaapiDriver="i965" doesn’t seem to have any effect.

But I found the setting to disable hardware accelerated transcoding and I tried disabling that but it takes forever to start content now. Like 1 or 2 minutes to play anything?

With hardware accel off, I also see that the “Quality” setting is “Convert to…” and there’s no option for playing the source, which is very strange. I’m playing h265 1080p anime with 10 bit audio. The performance with hardware accel off does not seem usable.

I’m turning it back on, but then I can’t use subtitles. I swear this was working fine BEFORE I bought the plex pass. I don’t understand why.

Okay, turns out I was editing the wrong Preferences file. Seems that maybe when I did an upgrade at some point Plex changes locations and the old setup was left over. VaapiDriver="i965" seemed to be the ticket. I can use subtitles now.

Thank you @Divideby0 !
