Just tried this and it works just fine.
Really like this new feature.
@TeknoJunky, I wholeheartedly agree. This feature disparity is unmanageable. I am just in the process of converting my existing un-managed users to managed users (all in the same household) in order to give them the skip-ahead feature without getting them all individual Plex Passes. But now I need to re-think as they probably would love the Watch Together feature more than the skip-ahead feature.
Plex, help! Can you share your roadmap on which features will be targeted towards managed users and which will be targeted towards un-managed users?
I really, really do like the watch together feature!
I’m super excited about this feature! I’ve been struggling with trying to use third-party alternatives (which all suck) for years. My family has resorted to manually doing “1-2-3-GO” to keep us in sync lol
Can a Plex employee possibly shed any light on when this might be available for browsers, something a little more specific than “soon”?
Can’t wait to try this out.
Really really really hope Plex extends this feature to music. It would be great when on a zoom social call etc to be able to have everyone synced in with the same background music for the party!
This is a really great feature, however, is there a reason why you cannot cast and watch together at the same time on Android? Is it a technical limitation or a current soft limitation?
Yes, I don’t want to watch together and be stuck watching o. My phone, need to be able to use watch together from a web browser, and cast at the same time
Cool feature but will it ever be on Windows/Web?
The announcement blog post answers your question, "Support for web and other platforms to follow soon. "
Now as to what soon means…
The biggest gripe I have at the moment is while the start of the streams take individual buffering into account, anytime a party member pauses and resumes a stream the party sync is lost by at least a second, this is even on the home network with direct streaming, albeit with different OS platforms.
Not really a surprise, this tends to be the biggest issue with all related features, and the seek function is already lightyears ahead of similar offerings. I think they will have to find a happy balance on the sync check during mid-stream playback, and better yet maybe allow us to adjust those values.
All in all I’m fairly impressed with the initial offering… wondering if they can add a chat feature on the web
Not too worried about having audio chat room options as I imagine having a separate call/party app on a mobile device would be easier to manage and less prone to headaches.
Thanks for this! I was at a loss, but uninstalling the app on my iPhone and re-installing did the trick.
Anyway to totally disable it?
I find it funny that watch something together with my friend on the other side of the world was a feature that was implemented before a watch together locally (similar to Netflix) with my wife on our couch (so that a movie is marked as watched on both our users).
This feature is great and works fine. But the host can’t choose quality if there are multiple versions.
chat feature would be awsome
Yes, upvote for music, this feature has been the origin of this type of concept on the boards for a LOOOONG time. PLEASE add for music, it will help to undermine my echo Dot which is definitely a good thing.
Also please add support for Watch Together for Plex Media player. I’m updated to the latest version today and neither is watch together supported on it from what I can see but also you can’t Cast a Watch Together session from your Android device.
Ideal scenario is remote control of the movie from your phone to the big screen but the movie also running on the iPad in the kitchen (so the person going to make a drink doesn’t miss the action!).
Cheers for your awesome work on this wonderful much anticipated feature.
Love Plex!
I haven’t seen this mentioned here but I have one Plex-Pass for my own server and it is signed in on each of my TV’s and apps. Works great. For this “Watch Together”, how do I watch something with my wife if I am out of town and she is home. When we go to the “Watch Together” menu, it only lists those we share our server with and NOT ourselves. Wold be great to choose my own ID and the device signed into that ID so I could say I wanted to watch with y wife on the Living Room TV or she could tell me to use her Phone.
Workaround: you can create a dummy managed user and invite that… ignore it not joining and just get started with the watch-together session on your own.
The watch-together session should also show up on your other devices – so while away from home you should still be able to join your own watch-together session from that other devices
Just tested… that actually works
When opening the session, Plex will show you the other participants (=your own account) and from which device they’re watching.
Thanks for the workaround. Maybe the developers will see the suggestion so that you don’t need a workaround.
Is this actually supported on a Fire TV Stick. I think mines a version 2, all up to date but no feature. I’m not sure where the 8.1.1 version requirement comes from because none of the devices seem to run at that version. This wouldn’t be a thing if there was SOME level of PC support. Can this be made a priority please? Surely there can be some support for Web or Plex for Windows if you’re killing Media player?
You should really update your facts
Plex Media Player doesn’t seem to go anywhere – it’s now even listed on the official download page again. Also it’s been posted above that support for more clients is in the making – keep in mind this is a PREVIEW!
As for Fire TV… make sure your client is actually up-to-date. This feature will only work with version 8.1.0 or newer. Update cycles on Amazon and Google Play can occasionally take a moment for the updates to be made available.
That’s cool. I just assumed Media player was bottom of the pile, good to know it’s not a second class citizen in this respect, for me it’s the place where a lot of the value will come from Watch Together using this as a primary device with Android devices dotted about the house away from the living room. The new client version doesn’t seem to want to update beyond 7.2.1.6014 (670cda0c). Thanks for the reassurances. Sorry about forgetting you’d double backed on killing media player…
