How do I de-activate this feature? I have created three accounts, one for me two for my kids. The kids have age restrictions.
Now I see on my start screen all the movies my son is currently watching, don’t want this, don’t like this feature, don’t understand the purpose!
I’ve been trying to use it since it was announced and I’m utterly baffled. I’ve tried my (fully updated, force quitted, signed-out-and-back-in tvOS, iOS, and iPadOS apps), I’ve tried different user accounts. I’ve long pressed on the title and also used the “…” more option. Nothing. The watch together option doesn’t show. I can’t think of any listed prerequisites I’m missing.
I’m using a hosted server for my personal Plex library, if that makes a difference.
I would be interested in synchronized playback on multiple screens under the same account/in the same house.
Often when I’m working in my home office, I’ve got Plex media running as background noise on Windows. Sometimes, walking into the living room I find my son watching something I’d like to see too, and I’d love to be able to go back to my office and click something like a Join button and start streaming in sync with the living room Roku. Or even have multiple TVs in the house playing the same media during laundry or other household chores when I’m roaming around.
I can understand the desire for an integrated chat feature, and how it would be easy to implement on some platforms, but TV-based platforms like Roku would require an additional device anyway. You can’t really type messages on a Roku without using your phone, and in that case why not just use the phone for chatting anyway. I’m not even sure that the Roku platform would support that kind of two-way traffic.
Perhaps integrating with something like Discord would be a better way to go. On platforms that support it, you could Discord chat right from the Plex app, and on platforms like Roku, you could still join the Discord channel on another device and be in sync.
You can do this now. The only requirement is that you have to invite at least one friend. This friend can be a full user or a managed user in your home. Note that it doesn’t require all invited users to join - you can open the item, and start playback manually. We also support joining the same Watch Together session as the same user from multiple devices.
Not working well… I can invite people and they can see and listen to the video on their end… I can see the video playing on my end, but the audio is all distorted. It is like when you turn a TV and it has no signal… That is the sound that I always get… I am using a Nvidia Shield as my server. I have restarted everything, tried different media, same results.
So it’s not so much a Watch-together issue but a general playback issue in your setup?
Do you experience this on other clients as well or only on your Shield?
Only on my Shield. While playing back without Watching Together, sound is fine.
Hopefully this gets released on Mac OS and Windows apps before quarantine ends lol Looking forward to it!!
Same with some people here, the Watch Together feature just isn’t appearing on my plex app for iPhone. I’ve deleted it, reinstalled, signed out and done everything and it still
Isn’t appearing???
I have a number of users… we can’t figure out who can do what…
One user has the ability to start a Watch Together while others cannot.
Could some one explain what users can or cannot do with this feature.
See the related support article linked above:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/watch-together/
As of today that means:
Requirements
Watch Together is supported in the following player/client apps. Generally speaking, everyone using the feature together will need to have the newest release of their particular app. The minimum requirements may also increase over time, as fixes and improvements are made in the apps.
- Amazon Fire TV (v8.1.0 or newer)
- Android mobile (v8.1.0 or newer)
- Android TV (v8.1.0 or newer)
- Apple TV (v7.0 or newer)
- iOS (v7.0 or newer)
- Roku (v6.6.0 or newer)
Invite Friends
Once you have started a Watch Together session, you will be prompted to select the friends you wish to join the session with you. Before you can select someone for the session, you need to already be friends with that user. If you are not yet friends, simply invite them as a friend. If you’re planning to watch personal media off your Plex Media Server, make sure that you’ve shared the content with them so that they have access.
Tip! : If someone just accepted a friendship or sharing request from you, both of you may need to restart your player app to pick up the change, so that you can use Watch Together.
I read that before I posted…
It doesn’t say anything about what the friend requirements…
Yes we all are using a client that is listed
example
I can start a WT from my admin with some of my friends
I have my own Plex TV account but that can’t start a WT but can receive one.
A friend Scott can start one with my Plex TV account, but not with my admin account.
I could go through all my friend and list the combinations but what it comes down to is that in most cases it wont work, Some times it’s not listed as an option.
I can’t figure it so we gave up…
Would be nice if it worked, Like most Plex features it’s a wanabe…
I’m ok if you want to use this to vent…
Then we don’t have to pursue this discussion.
If you’re looking for a solution, we can go through this step by step.
e.g. which exact clients you’re using (platform, OS version, Plex version), anything specific about those users (e.g. regular vs. managed accounts), are both of your accounts “friends” with those friends of yours… down to where you looked for the button to start a watch-together session within the app you’re using (as you couldn’t find it)…
Clients are Fire sticks 4k, iPhone, roku, all current releases of the OS and Plex (first thing I checked)
Only user I have managed is the admin account, no home users at all.
Had every friend add the other friends to their Plex Accounts, some were able to do it others had issues.
Example;
My friend Scott can see both my admin account and my regular account.
But he can only start a WT with my admin account on my iPhone from his iPhone.
If he tries my regular account nothing happens. no invite.
From my regular account I cannot start a WT to any user…
I’m glad your ok with it…
As I said we gave up on it.
I give you the information so it will help you fix any other problems.
I’m sure that none of my friends want to spend any more time trying to get this to work.
I hope that my experience with this feature is just the odd ball.
Issue for me is closed… have a great day.
I struggled for a few hours and system upgrades before I could get the Watch Together option to show up for me. In the end I bought a 1-month Plex Pass and the option immediately showed up. The FAQ explicitly says
Our Watch Together feature is currently free for all users when streaming from our free, ad-supported “Movies & TV” streaming service and for personal media from a Plex Media Server during the initial preview period.
It appears that’s not (or is no longer) the case. Or wasn’t for my account, at least. If you’re having trouble, maybe give that a try, although obviously it’d be better if this issue were sorted out by the Plex devs.
Hi there
We tested a bit
The technolgically savvy (read: power users) found it very cool
The not-so-techie (read: normal people) were a bit overwhelmed because we tested with three movies and somehow the three watch together invites showed up at the same time.
Also they somehow managed to start playback of one of the other movies while the rest of us watched another.
So we gave up on them
Would it be possible to put watch together invites into the menu somehow?
For the rest: bravo. Very impressive
I too am one of the folks without the option available in the PLEX app.
PLEX is patched to the latest version, server it is running on has been rebooted. PLEX apps (all up-to-date) from 2 iPads running 13.5.1 nor Android phones running v10 have this option for any content.
Indeed. I just want to be a user of this software, I don’t want to have to spend hours scouring these forums to understand what the difference even is.
I have friends, I have a Plex pass, I created them accounts so that they could access my library on my server. I don’t want to have to care about different types of users. and nor do they.
DEV: There should be an option to disable this feature, removing the ‘Watch Together’ tab from the viewing submenu the same way that delete option appeared when enable and dissappeared when disable. While many appreciate this feature, I have no usage and found it annoying as it’s the top option (was delete before) of the submenu. I’m using the delete option and find myself always selecting ‘Watch Together’ to delete media. I do appreciate Plex and this is just a minor annoyance.
Sorry, was a 70/30 (in 70% of all issues the source is sitting 30 cm away from the screen) issue! I have disabled the log-on for local networks.
After I removed this settings, issue is solved.
This is remembering me, why I had to activate this setting, log-on is only working with active internet connection => my son was not able to use the Plex Server when our internet connection was broken for one day!
