WD Direct Play Live TV DVR

My setup is WD EX2 Ultra and HDHomeRun ConnectDuo. I understand the NAS cannot transcode any resolution according to the NAS compatibility spreadsheet. But my expectation is to direct stream TV and playback recorded content at original resolution provided my client is compatible and I have sufficient bandwidth. This should work in a local (in-house) LAN connection should, right? The HD homerun app is able to do this.

Transcoding was disabled by default on installing the plex server. I get “source is unavailable” error when I try to watch from plex-web chrome browser on Mac, and “cannot play … no direct play profile exists” on iphone 12. What am i missing?

The only way I get anything to play is actually by enable transcoding, but it pauses and re-buffers every 2 sec, NAS CPU is near 100%.

Ideally I want to be able to access the video content remotely, but it’s frustrating that is doesnt even work in-house.

Appreciate any insight.

Browsers don’t support mpeg2 and I don’t believe the IOS does either. On top of that Plex has started deinterlacing 1080i streams on the server by default. Likely to work around problems on Roku and Android clients.

Thank you for the response. I had set the playback quality on the iOS app to 2mbps / 720p thinking the link was bandwidth limited for remote access. But anything less than maximum / 4K HD will force transcoding since the source is 1020p. My nas server can’t handle transcoding, thus causing the buffering and stream pause.

iOS quality setting as max/4K allows direct play, which is good for home network, where bandwidth is not an issue.

I will have to come up with a better solution for remote access because of the NAS CPU limitations . I appreciate any recommendations on NAS / servers that can handle 1080p transcoding across low bandwidth network interfaces.

Several variables to consider, you need a cpu with 2000 Passmark per stream score (example 3 streams total score 6000) or preferably one with an Intel iGPU on board and Passmark score for Single Thread > 1500. That raises the price considerably. An example would be a QNAP TVS-472XT-PT-4G
