Webm does not play on LG-TV app

Plex Web 4.108.0
Plex Media Server 1.32.5.7349-xxxxxxxxxxx
Plex LG app, current version
.
I frequently download videos that are in webm/vp9/opus form. Many will not play in LG-TV Plex app. The videos play without issue in the laptop I use for a media server, or VLC.

My TV is connected to the home network via LAN and WiFi, as is my laptop.

Anyone have an explanation or ideas in general? Will Plex eventually play webm on the LG TV app?

This from support:

  • MKV container (includes files with .webm extension) with:
  • H.264, hevc (H.265), mjpeg, mpeg2video, mpeg4, vc1, or vp9 video encoding
  • aac, ac3, dts, eac3, mp2, mp3, pcm, or vorbis audio encoding

Does the Plex LG TV app have the same compatibility?

Thank you.

Not according to the support article. In that case, Plex will usually transcode the video into a supported format.

As for “does not play”… how so? Do you get an error message, some timeouts, bad/broken playback…?

This is fairly typical.

so… it appears the player on your TV cannot direct play/stream the video and will therefore transcode it to a supported format. It seems your server isn’t strong enough to handle that transcode in real-time (see speed: 0.2).

Hello,

LG data support is not really helpful. From what I can scrounge, VP9 is supported in SOME models. Which? According to an Emby poster, LG does not support Opus audio but can be ‘tricked’ into playing the format. When I download a video using the youtube-dlp app, the last line on the screen is something like: “[Fixing MPEG-TS].”
That may be a clue.

Don’t know the answer, too little data available. Fortunately, when I can download a webm version, there is also an mp4 version that plays without any problems. That’s my current solution.

May as well close this issue.
