Server Version#: v1.16.0.1226-7eb2c8f6f - Synology DS916+ x86_64 - build: linux-x86_64
Player Version#: Plex for LG 3.13.27
TV: LG 55EG9A7V, WebOS 2.0
Dear friends,
Plex TV Player forces transcoding 1080p H.265 movies to H.264. Will it be solved?
Looks like the Plex app in LG Smart TV store for WebOS 2.0 hasn’t been updated for long time, should i start searching for an alternative Plex client which supports H.256 direct play and looks the same or better? Please suggest one if it exists! Thanks
Ignore the version number of the Plex client listed on the LG store. It’s basically a wrapper that downloads an updated copy direct from Plex. You can see the actual version by looking at the app settings once it’s running.
Transcoding always^wusually uses h.264 rather than h.265 as h.265 encoding is very CPU intensive. Chances are your transcode is being precipitated by something other than the video codec. Possibly an audio codec your TV doesn’t support or bitmap subtitles?
Thanks for the reply!
I looked up the Plex client version number via web browser at Plex settings- Authorized Devices. Do you mean the number provided there, doesn’t correspond to the version it really is, as well?
You are right, if we talk about transcoding. Excuse me, I wasn’t clear in my topic’s name and i’ve changed it now. I would like not to use transcoding at all, since my TV supports H.265. I would like to set direct play in Plex client for my H.265 [8 and 10bit] movies.
This last particular case was a 1080p video H.265 [8bit] / audio AC3, subtitles disabled, all supported by tv), the problem was/is, direct play option in tv plex client just doesn’t exist.
No, that shows you the correct version. It matches on mine, at least: 3.103.1 is shown when running the app on the TV and in my authorised devices list.
I’ve just noticed you’re running an older version of WebOS, though: 2.0 as opposed to 4.1.0 on my B8
Some searching of the forums suggests it may be an issue with your set not supporting the mkv container format and the transcoding is so it can be sent out as an MP4: Direct Play HEVC on LG Smart TV with WEB OS 3 using the Plex App This may be resolved by updating your TV.
You’ll need to have a look in the console output of your Plex Media Server and try to figure out what’s triggering the transcode.
