I setup my lgtv to connect to plex and that wasn’t a problem. Still isn’t. However sometimes my ISP decides I don’t need internet for a few hours and takes it away. When that happens the app on my smart tv just tells me the internet is gone and it can’t connect. Now on my server I turned off authentication for my network and on the tv I have it set to manual and my local ip. Is there something I am missing to get the tv to talk directly to the server or am I forced to use dlna? Because the video app in webos is seriously dodgy and more often than not I have to resort to a usb drive. Which is annoying when I have a plex media server on the same local network but apparently to get them to talk it needs an external internet connection.
well that seems like a rather large design flaw. Clearly I’m not the only one after such functionality and now it means I have to consider if plex suits my needs. I don’t really need a media system that will go down when all the other media systems go down. I needed one that would remain solid whatever
Daemon, you can use a LAN connection to a server with DLNA and if your watching Plex and the internet drops out it will continue playing if you have set it up correctly… There is also the option of just using a USB flash drive with your collected content to get you by.
Hint: With a operating system called WebOS, I could only image it is all in the cloud.
webos is a linux based system designed by palm, bought by hp, sold to Qualcomm and licenced to lg. So it’s not that different to android in some ways. And yes I know I have alternatives but, for me, it’s primary role is for these outages since the kids already have netflix for normal operations. The only other use I have for it is uploading dvds which still generally works because I have internet most of the time. It’s just since I’m only just starting with plex and already running into work arounds it’s meh. I think I might try Emby and see if that fairs better then make a choice on going forward.
Good luck with Emby, same problems with internet connectivity. If JellyFin had TV clients and was a bit more polished I would recommend that road. Plex is by far your best option available at present. There is no need for your use case for a Plex Pass, yet a TV client will need a one time fee.
I have satellite Pay TV, for sport and some entertainment channels. So my options are covered as well.
As for the origins of WebOS all ready well aware, good to read some others are in the know.
