Weird PGS subtitles issue with Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: Latest

Hopefully somebody can help me with this, as I’s driving me mad.

I have a number of episodes of a show (GoT) I’ve ripped from the original UHD’s that have forced subtitles in PGS format. Nothing new there, I’m sure many of us have this.

I used MKVToolNix GUI to strip out the audio layers and additional subtitles I didn’t want, making sure that for the forced subs I did want that they had the default track and forced flags set.

Now, when I come to play the files on my Shield Pro 2019, if I start playing the file with the forced subs enabled, the server will try and transcode the file and playback is very stop start. However, if I start playing it with subtitiles disabled and then turn them on from the sub menu while the video is playing then everything continues fine in direct play.

If I then stop playing the file and start playing again (with subtitles still enabled) it continues in direct play - but, if I start playing another file and then go back to this one (with subtitles still enabled) then I’m back to square one.

It’s driving me crazy. On the server I have subtitle mode set to ‘Shown with foreign audio’, which I read is the correct setting to use for forced subs. I’ve tried it with both the automatically select box ticked and unticked, and have tried with every combination of subtitile burn option on the Shield itself - automatic, image only and always and nothing seems to help at all.

Anyone have any suggestions? I’ve read so many different threads on here and reddit and nothing resolves this. If I had any hair left, I’d be pulling it out

And for the final weirdness, yesterday when I got fed up working on this I decided to play one of the LOTR Extended films I’d just ripped from the UHD - it started playing in only Dolby Digital - so rebooted the Shield and tried again, and it played correctly in Atmos. Only happens when I’ve been trying to reolve this issue with the GoT files.

Not quite the same issue, but having problems with subtitles too. I record TV shows through HDHomeRun Quatro to my Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 and there are no subtitles listed. It says, unknown (Closed Captions). When I open the .ts file in VLC, it shows the subtitles as disabled. I’ve tried refreshing all metadata, but nothing happens. When I enable unknown subtitles, the shield starts to transcode and makes the tv show unwatchable because of all of the buffering.

Under Video Quality settings try turning off Adjust automatically and put Home Streaming on Maximum if it is not.

Hi BigWheel - that’s what I’m already set to I’m afraid

Fixed it.

Connected the Shield directly to my LG C9 OLED and it’s fine - use eARC back to my Denon X4700H for audio.

Reconnect the Shield to the Denon and the problem reoccurs - so the Denon is obviously doing something, but I don’t understand why
