There’s an old Sci-Fi show I have called Sliders which aired it’s first season of episodes out of order for the purpose of generating better ratings by airing the more exciting episodes first. The show had 2 different DVD releases, the first contained the episodes in the air date order. The second had the episodes in the actual intended story order.
TVDB has the episodes in air date order and their “DVD Order” is matched to the first DVD release, which is identical to the air date order. I’ve tried posting on their forums requesting that they change the DVD order to match the second DVD release but no dice.
What options do I have? Is there something I can put in the metadata of the files themselves to force Plex to recognize them in the correct viewing order? I’d rather not have to depend on manually modifying the metadata in Plex in case I accidentally refresh it or something.
TMDB does appear to have an “Intended Order” list that has the episodes in the correct order:
However I can’t get Plex to use it. I tried doing a fix match on the show then selected TMDB as the source, then edited the show and switched it to DVD order and then refreshed metadata but the episodes are still in the same order as before.
Almost nothing.
Only the labour-intensive manual input of metadata is possible.
Before doing that, you should Fix Match the show to the Personal Media agent.
If your files are in mp4 containers, you could embed the metadata directly into them.
The files are MKV but I might just convert them to MP4 and add the metadata to the files if it provides a permanent solution. Are there any Plex guides to embedding metadata into files so Plex reads them correctly?
Can you clear up this comment? DVD ordering is no longer supported by Plex?
I ask because I’m currently having issues with some shows. What used to work perfectly when selecting DVD order for TVDB no longer seems to be working. And, because of the work on their site, I’m unable to see the DVD ordering.
The MovieDB has production ordering, but I don’t think that’s working either. I’m currently having issues with getting Freaks and Geeks sorted by production order.
Also, Seinfeld is now a complete mess. I’m kind of at a loss of what to do.
Thanks this worked. I had to make Local Media Assets the first agent under Shows then used FFmpeg to convert the file containers to MP4 and to set the “title” and “synopsis” metadata tags which sync to the Plex Title and Summary.
