Unless I’m missing it, there are no instructions anywhere to be found for the new app that is required for accessing music. That’s the sole reason I got Plex in the first place - to access my home music library remotely. I want to be able to listen to my entire collection of music in an entirely random fashion. That does not appear to be possible now. If it is, I sure can’t figure it out. And the snarky “It may be confusing but it will be fine” message that appeared for a while at the top of the screen just made me enraged. How about some help instead?
The mobile music application will be Plexamp going forward. Once you’ve installed it and signed in to your server you can play your entire library in a random order by starting the “Library Radio” station. All the available stations are available in the “Stations” section of the home screen.
There are other ways of accomplishing this as well. For example, you could create a smart collection which contains your entire library and sort it randomly. Every time it is refreshed the order will change.
Hey is Screwball Patrick Spence from Sonos epic blunder running Plex now??? Huge price increase, terrible new ALPHA APP, unresponsive billing department +++
When people, when will we rise up and stop paying these horribly greedy CEOs to be their beta testers??
Well my household just canceled our Plex Pass annual subscription renewal.
So tired of being an unpaid beta-tester for poorly run tech companies!
Time to move to Jellyfin. I was able to stand up an instance on the same server I run Plex on. About an hour of tinkering with what custom CSS I liked the most, library management, user addition, and port configurations… 85% of the way to Plex parity… for free, for life.
Thank you for the response. It would have been nice if there were some sort of instructions or FAQ to go along with the Plexamp app, instead of a condescending “We know it’s confusing but you’ll figure it out” message.
“Note that after 4/29/2025 a Plex Pass subscription (or Remote Watch Pass subscription) will be required to access your media server remotely.” This is the least surprising item I’ve learned all day. Since no one appears to have been clamoring for these changes, this explains it.
If you have some specific issues/questions I’d recommend that you start a forum thread (with the Plexamp tag). Plexamp users on the forum are pretty responsive and one of the Co-founders regularly participates in those threads to help address any problems.
My experience is that most folks really end up enjoying Plexamp. Its basic functionality is easily accessible; the various “radios,” one of which I mentioned above and the library tab (music note on the nav bar at the bottom) are a couple of ways to start playing music immediately.
The Sonic Adventure feature is cool as well (available from the search tab). If you’re not sure what you’d like to listen to exactly, but have a few tracks in mind, you can supply those and Plexamp will build a playlist which uses those choices as signposts, filling in the gaps.
And if you hit a song and would like to hear more by the same artist, or just tracks which are similar sonically, the various DJs available (turntable icon when playing a track) make it easy to insert more items into an already-playing queue.
Of course, you can still use standard playlists as well.
Inability to browse the library during playback & manage the playback queue is a dealbreaker for me - I’m surprised so few other people have noticed that it’s totally gone.
I was surprised when I opened up the Plex app on my Shield TV and found a nearly unusable mess. I had to close the app a few times when I found myself in a few places that I couldn’t back up from. The additional steps to get to my movies, the loss of the alphabet down the right side for a quick way to jump around in my list of movies, the repeating click effect when I selected an option, and the overall sluggishness made for a very painful experience.
I’m glad my Apple TV still has the old version on it!
Please fix this new update! Update it’s absolutely horrible. Keeps crashing does not work whatsoever. Or at least make the old version available on the App Store again. I just re upped my annual subscription and I’m not very happy. This by far has to be the worst upgrade I’ve ever seen in any app.
What a horrible upgrade probably the worst I’ve ever seen in any app in my life. Are they gonna fix this thing soon? At least make the old version available again.
I believe music is permanently gone. You’re supposed to use the plexamp app moving forward. Plexamp is better than most commercial streaming apps IMHO.
