One with at least 3 HDMI inputs - so you can hook up a capable device to run a decent (if one is ever going to exist) Plex app on it.
Reading this forum will reveal that Plex apps built into smart TVs, generally speaking, are really dumb. Get ahead of the game and buy a nice Dumb TV, then hook something good up to it.
4K - more trouble than it’s worth.
1080p - cheap and effective.
I have a Roku Ultra, that for the moment is my primary Plex Box.
I have an Original FireTV that’s ‘OK’ as a secondary Plex Box and is used by guests without many issues.
Many people swear by the Shield, and by all accounts it is quite capable, not without it’s difficulties, pretty much like everything else, but certainly not at the PITA level as smart TV apps that are notorious for misbehavior.
To answer the original question: I swear by my 2018 model LG sets. The client isn’t as fast or pretty as when I used to run Rasplex on a Pi, but they do 4k/HDR real well, passthrough AC3 and DTS to my amp and need fewer power supplies, ethernet and HDMI cables, and time to maintain.
I used to have the time and space to maintain a high-end home theatre system, now I have a family
But yeah, if I had the time, space and money I’d go with a Shield.
You need to look for a tv with e-arc support so that it can pass hd audio without transcoding.
You also need an e-arc receiver or sound bar that is capable/compatible with the hd audio.
I have FIreTV but today i failed to play a file h265. I dont know for what.
I cant find a good device for Plex client. only pc Windows or Mac are valid clients.
Why shield and not lg 2018?
If you’re going to use 265 the difficulty (PITA) factor increases x10.
My recommendation:
Dumb TV
Nvidia Shield
lol! I like that. I would do Dumb TV & Roku3.
That’s right out for 265 and the UNO performance blows goats on a 3. An Ultra, perhaps, but if you want something as close to VLC (play any kind of junk you throw at it), go Shield or Go Home.
why not an ultimate tv LG 2019 with high performance and direct play? why so difficult ?
I tend to agree that the Shield is by far and away the best experience. For those who don’t want to pay that premium I would recommend the Xiaomi Mi Box S, which has a lot of the same desirable features as the Shield (stock Android TV OS, 4K, voice remote, correct DRM for Netflix) but is much cheaper. You can usually find it at Amazon, Walmart or Gearbest for $60-70 USD. It absolutely blows away the Roku Ultras and the Fire TV IMO (personally, I hate their locked down ecosystems, much like on smart TVs). My only (somewhat major) gripe is that it doesn’t have wired ethernet, which I think is a must for reliable 4K streaming.
You mean stuff encoded in 265? Something I have no worries in. I do not use 265 and don’t plan on until the year 2050(maybe 2100 if I’m still alive)
This data and name (PITA), Where i can view for study ? Thanks
Why in netflix app with x265 is so easy play in the smartTV and so not for plex client?
I have always used fire tv for H265. Not problem until today with a file. Also VLC have a problem. From iPad, with Plex, no problems.
I don’t know, but, If my smart tv is so old… maybe i can choose a good one for Plex
Maybe i connect a pc Windows low cost to The tv in hdmi or to my amp. Nice idea until will release a stable app for Smart tv?
I believe the LG OLED with alpha 7 or 9 processors are the way to go, like 55 or 65 OLEDB8. If you have a deeper pocket the 2019 models with Second Gen Alpha processors and ultimately eARC for best support for home theater. It’s correct that some 4K can cause issue especially with some sub types or HD-MA sound track but with eARC that issue should be very limited. The new UNO UI is looking very good for LG TV’s. I must say I’m a happy camper with my New OLED and Plex
I so like this thread.
In 2012 i study The ARC for my home theather. And just now i want a system with eARC.
Thanks a lot to everyone for The discussion in this thread.
