What to do with my ATV3

Now that I have an ATV 4K?

I suppose I can keep the Apple TV 3 hooked up alongside the 4K, but I was just wondering about allowing the Apple TV 4K to update it’s firmware. I believe it is still running tvOS 7.2, I don’t even know if it will update to the latest firmware. My questions would be, what advantages would this have, and most importantly, would Plexconnect still work?

When I am not running Plexconnect the device instantly wants to update, and it is difficult to back out of that update process. But I have been running Plexconnect 24/7 for the last four years or so, The device has not had very many opportunities to try to update itself and PC has been blocking the update process extremely well.

I suppose I can give this to somebody who might appreciate Plex connect and have an interest in setting it up. I’m just wondering about updating, what are the firmware limits for Plex connect these days?

Ever since PC was updated to version 6 it has been running great with virtually no problems whatsoever.

This thing served me well, I got it refurbished from Apple for about $50. It still might have some usefulness but I just need to know if Plex connect will still run.

I tried setting up my Apple TV 4K to the DNS of my PC machine, and then I installed the trailers app from the App Store. But I suppose it’s not quite the same app and it didn’t do anything. Also, there was no way to install the profile since there is no longer any USB port. So unless there is some other way to install the certificate, Plex connect really can’t help an Apple TV 4K, now that I can install the Plex app directly. But I simply miss the behavior of Plexconnect, it’s a fine interface. That’s the one thing it took me a while to realize that the entire interface is running from my computer and it gives me access to every part of Plex that’s important. Maybe there are other ways to use Plexconnect that are beyond Apple TV 3.

Should I just pack this thing up? Try to sell it for 20 bucks? Give it to somebody? I will probably just give it to someone…

I really like the 4K capabilities, but I am really going to miss futzing around with Plexconnect, it has been swell!

after using Plex connect for almost 5 years it’s like I don’t want to give up using it. I think I’m just going to keep my old Apple TV three on 7.2 that way I can still use it in case of emergencies.

I need to figure out how to set up Kitana for my old channels, but I can’t figure out how to get it loaded. I thought since it was python it would load with my existing system but apparently I need something else.

Thanks, I tried giving it a shot yesterday. I had to install Docker. I got it to start, but it wasn’t propagating to the port.

Then I tried updating my python to 3.5.0, and it is sufficiently different than 2.7.8, it would not accept the syntax given in the katana README file. I don’t even see how I was able to get Plex
connect to run all these years, all that required was clicking on the PY file. Do I need to remove the earlier version of python before I can use the later version?

There is contact information in there, I will try to get a hold of the author.

Thanks.

PlexConnect was developed for ATV2 and ATV3. I have my ATV3 with the latest firmware (7.3.1) and I have no problems.

When ATV4 was announced there was an attempt to port PlexConnect to it. But then Plex produced its own Plex app and the porting effort was abbandoned. Therefore you should use either Plex or Infuse as plex “client” in the ATV4.

Regarding Kitana, pls note that Plex announced end of support for plug-ins. Therefore if you are running it as a plug-in it will stop working in the near future, in all Plex clients.

Yeah, the sad part is the plexconnect UI is far superior (IMO) to what Plex did with it’s own plexapp. I suggested at that time there might be a number of users willing to help fund porting over plexconnect and turning into it’s own app but apparently no one was that interested. Bottom line, I’m still using plexconnect for my ATV3 but went with Infuse for the ATV4 which is a lot better than plex’s plexapp. JMTC

Yah, you can also use VLC as well. I’ve used Infuse, but you have to pay a subscription to be able to play MKV files, or pay something like 50 bucks for lifetime Pro mode. I found other apps in the ATV app store that work too, I already had File Explorer Pro, I think you can use that too. And I found an app called Playable that can do it as well, but it’s another subscription based app, they limit your audio and video playback to 5 minutes without the subscription. But it is a poor player, that crashes constantly.

It’s too bad about the channels, really, because I had on demand streaming from every major network, and that was convenient. Also, Subzero. I used to be able to stream entire seasons of certain shows from the channels, depending on the source. ABC was good about that, I watched all of Flash Forward that way, I was impressed by the video quality. And I went through most of the south park channel, I think that’s still up. But re: Subzero, Plex has built in a better Sub system, I’ve found subs right away that Subzero did not have. And, The Plex client no longer gives access to the channels.

My main complaint with the Plex ATV app is that there is no choice between list view and grid view, Grid view sucks… You have to keep moving toward the right to show all of the episodes, while Plex Player allows you do scroll downward. And, there is no mor “all episodes” view, which was convenient. But the main irritability factor is the Grid view being on a single line.
