<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>
I have recordings that are incomplete or sometimes Plex records the same show twice (at the same time) as displayed in the activity monitor. It would be helpful to know what tuner is being used. How do I know what tuner is used for an active recording? How do I know what tuner was used for a recording in the recent past?
Are there any Recording troubleshooting guides? If I knew the right place to check log files, I may be able to figure out what are causing my recording issues.
I don’t have a WinTV tuner so I can’t fully answer this question, but I hope the following will help:
Make sure you have your Plex Server logs set with debug level on, verbose off. Then look in your Plex Server logs at the appropriate “Plex Media Server.log” file. (The log files roll, so check time stamps. For example, if you are looking for a recording that happened a couple days ago then it might be in “Plex Media Server.3.log”.) Find the date/time in the log where the recording began, and then look for lines like:
Apr 05, 2024 20:00:00.461 [123716802014008] DEBUG - [Grabber/41704b3705fb47477adfa17f4da168354e5f5d3f] Grabber: Waiting for a tuner on device://tv.plex.grabbers.hdhomerun/1058F50E (2 available) for at most 3660 seconds.
Apr 05, 2024 20:00:00.461 [123716802014008] DEBUG - [Grabber/41704b3705fb47477adfa17f4da168354e5f5d3f] Grabber: Allocated a tuner on device://tv.plex.grabbers.hdhomerun/1058F50E (1 left)
Look toward the end of the log lines above and you can see it references “hdhomerun”.
The following is true for my HDHR. Yours is a different model, but I think this will still work: To see which tuner is used on your HDHR, go to it’s web interface at “http://(your-HDHR-IP-address)” in a web browser. Then click on “System Menu”, then “System Log” and look for the correct date/timestamp, keeping in mind the HDHR logs are UTC time. Example for the recording from the Plex logs I snipped above:
Edit: For a recording in process, in Plex Web go to Settings → Live TV & DVR. The tuner(s) in use should have a different “dot” color. No recordings in process in the following screen shot:
Thank you for this information. I will need to keep watching for failed recordings and try to get to the logs in time. I have one example right now, but the logs have already rolled beyond that date/time.
Do you actually see the dot color change when the tuner is used? My dots never change. Here is an example where a program is being recorded, but none show as being used. If I pull up the web interface for the HDHomeRun Flex 4K, I can see it is using one of those tuners, so I would expect that one dot in Plex would be changed. I tried another Plex server and it also did not change the dot color when tuning to a channel using my HDHomeRun EXTEND, so it appears to not work on either of my Plex servers on either of these tuners for me.
I do get a color change on the dot color - screenshot with one tuner recording one one tuner red/in use:
It looks like you are using Plex for Win (or Linux), and I’m also seeing no dot color change there, so it looks like a bug. Try the web app (https://app.plex.tv) and see if that shows the tuner use correctly.
This also confirms a suspicion that I have had where at times it shows that is it recording the same show twice. This shows that it is consuming two of my available tuners to do that.
The best way to report a bug is to open a new topic on this forum under the appropiate tags. In the title provide a good description of the issue and support it in the body with as much evidence as you are able. Hopefully a Plex employee will see it and add it to their list. Plex doesn’t provide any public list of bugs/enhancements or timelines for fixes.
The best place to start looking into the double recording issue would be the debug level server logs. I’d look in two places - First there is a section in the logs where the server is deciding what to record and what tuner to user, and this usually happens during whatever you have defined as the maintenance window. The following is one line from my logs where it decided to record a show and notes what device and tuner it planned to use. Perhaps you may see multiple entries for an episode where it decided to “double record” that may give some insight?
Apr 09, 2024 04:53:02.890 [130260454804280] DEBUG - DVR:NewSchedule: device 0 tuner 0 airing 0 between 2024-04-09 21:00:00 and 2024-04-09 22:00:00 on channel 5fc76b608aba71002d9ac51a-5fc705e8104230002d14d870: 'The Rookie - E6 - Secrets and Lies'
The second would be to look in the logs at the time that the double-recording episode starts to record to see if there is anything unusual.
You could post logs here as well if you are comfortable with that. There are very knowledgable people on this forum that may identify the problem.
