Back when this feature launched, sonic analysis would keep getting stuck for me. The only fix was to examine logs to try to figure out what track(s) were causing problems, shuffle them out of the library, restart, etc.
I did all that, and I somehow even added all the problem tracks back and sonic analysis finished.
Well, I just had to rebuild my music library, and am back to square one. Sonic analysis got stuck really quickly. Server says it’s ongoing, but 0 CPU usage. I believe a server update that automatically skips bad tracks that sonic analysis gets stuck on was in the works months ago–is there any faster way to handle this? It be nice, even, if I could at least get some indication of what tracks are causing problems to avoid going through the logs.
Sonic Analysis can get stuck for more than one reason it seems, but finding a track it does not like may be the most common reason. Assuming that is what has happened to you, you do not need to go through your logs. Look at the processes running on the system and see if there is a Plex transcoder process that won’t die. The file it is working on should be included in the process arguments… use Process Explorer on Windows or ps on Linux to see what is going on.
You might also try sorting your library be track length. When I had bad tracks, each of them showed an absurd run time in Plex… like 25 hours. Every other player showed the expected runtime.
My bad tracks checked out kosher with every mp3 diagnostic tool I had, but Plex still hated them. I even reacquired the tracks from the commercial source… no change! I ended up manually transcoding them to WAV and then back to MP3 with lame. Not a perfect solution, but it was 4 tracks out of my whole library.
My sonic analysis is also hung up. It has been basically since the initial analysis when they released the feature. Looks like it has made it through several tens of thousands of albums (I think), but the status has been show “Processing 5376 Albums”, So I assume that means 5376 albums remain to be analyzed (considering the quantity of albums shown in my library view is much different).
My system has been restarted and Plex Media Server has updated numerous times since the initial hang.
Does Plex staff ever make any official comments about issues (and their resolve), or are we basically left out in the cold until a fellow community member gives a good piece of advice?
