I just found out about the removal of PMS 1.24.2.5000 from the update channel. As far as I am aware, there was no notification of this. I only noticed when I went to the Announcement thread for a different reason. I installed the 5000 build when I was notified of it, as I normally do.
Plex routinely lets me know when there is a new build of a later version than my current install. I think it would be a useful feature if it also notified me when the build I have has been retracted.
It appears that the update channel is only concerned about when the installed build is lower than the available build. It could be changed to respond to when the installed build is higher than the available build, and offer to perform the rollback. This has been a rare occurrence, and hopefully will remain so, but it wouldn’t hurt to be proactive about it.
The issue was with the installer.
If youare able to view the update notification for your server, it means that your server is already running and therefore has been installed successfully.
There is no need to notifiy you about an installer issue when you are not affected by said installer issue.
I don’t have any votes left… but the idea still deserves some thought and may be an easy implementation… if you just notify a user that the “installed version is no longer available”, then you enable a user who is not deep into forum stuff to follow up by themselves about the reason.
+1 from me (sorry again for not having active votes left for this)
No worries, I don’t have a vote to give it either. It’s a pretty rare occurrence, so it certainly shouldn’t be a high priority - just a nice thing that could be low-hanging fruit.
No - looking at the release announcements, it’s been done a few times for other reasons.
If a released version needs to be superseded, the typical software practice is to publish a higher version number, even if it’s a “re-run” of code from a previous build.
Otherwise it’s a packaging and communication nightmare for any downstream systems.
Which is not the way it works currently with PMS and Plex apps… just saying, no hard feelings
Completely avoiding release version downgrades is best practise. but changing behavior sometimes is harder than changing pieces of code.
