When will audio sync problems be fixed on Tivo Plex player (2.5.7)?

For about the last month the Tivo Plex client (2.5.5 and 2.5.7, on Tivo Roamio Plus & Tivo Minis) have had audio sync get messed up if you use FF or REW during playback. Not sure if its the server (Windows 0.9.16.0), or Tivo client. Some speculation that it’s a server issue.
Problem is discussed in this thread -

No workable solution is provided in this thread (improperly tagged as Answered). I don’t have these audio sync issues on my Apple TV / iPad / iPhones or other computers (with the Windows 0.9.16.0 server), only the Tivo player seems to have the issue. I’m happy to provide whatever you need to get it fixed.
Thanks, Kurt

Any response? Plex on my Tivo is unusable due to this problem.

Just updated Windows Plex server to 0.9.16.2. Same issue. How about fixing the problem? Its been there going on 3 months.

I have the same problem. It’s the TIVO (2.5.5 and 2.5.7) software that causes the problem. If you start watching on a phone or your PC, the sound sync properly. It only happens in the TIVO when you FF, Rwind or stop the video and come back later. When this first happen they backed off the 2.5.5 release and the problem was solved. They then re released 2.5.5 and then 2.5.7 with the problem still there. Please fix PLEX I love this software but this issue makes it nearly unusable.

I did some experimenting. It appears that the Tivo Plex player always chooses the 1st audio track. For most of my library, this is an AAC track. Virtually my entire library has 2 audio tracks. Encoded using Handbrake with the Apple TV 2 preselect. Here is a sample from the browser info window (3rd column, audio info) -

Language English
Duration 2:28:06
Bitrate 160 kbps
Stream Identifier 2
Profile lc
Codec AAC
Sampling Rate 48000 Hz
Bitrate Mode VBR
Audio Channel Layout stereo
Channels Stereo

Language English
Duration 2:28:06
Bitrate 640 kbps
Stream Identifier 3
Bit Depth 16
Codec AC3
Sampling Rate 48000 Hz
Bitrate Mode CBR
Audio Channel Layout 5.1(side)
Channels 5.1
Dialog Norm -31 dB

When checking the status on the Windows Plex server, both Video and Audio show as Direct Stream, and the audio sync problem is present (after resume, FF, REW). I created a video with the AC3 track first, and played it. The server shows it as Transcode (AAC), which I presume means it is transcoding the audio from AC3 to AAC. This situation seems to work! The Resume, FF, REW do not seem to cause the audio to go out of sync.

Finally, I checked the AC3 box in the Tivo Player, and played the same video (that has the AC3 audio track first). The server now shows Audio as Direct Stream (makes sense as it is AC3 -> AC3 in the player). This also has the audio sync problem after resume, FF, REW.

In summary, it appears the Tivo Player (2.5.7) has the audio sync problem if the audio is Direct Stream(ed) from the server. If it gets transcoded, the audio seems to stay correctly sync’d after Resume, FF, REW.

One other note. Someone mentioned that the file might need to be “web optimized” to fix the audio sync issue. I created a video with this option checked in Handbrake, and the Tivo player was not able to play it at all - it returned an error after ~30 seconds.

Also, updated to Windows Plex server 0.9.16.4 and the problem persists.

Just tested with Windows Plex server 0.9.16.6 and Tivo Player 2.5.7. Same problems. Going on 3 months since this was broken by an update. How about someone FIXING IT!

I used to be a fan of Plex and even got a lifetime Plex pass to show my support. Now I’m beginning to think it was mistake. Support has been absolutely dismal in all respects. How about someone from Plex offering some feedback on these threads? It would be appreciated!

It appears another Plex player for the Tivo was pushed out (ver 2.6.4 from settings menu). On this version, videos with the AAC track first don’t play at all - an error is reported after ~20 secs. Videos with the AC3 track first play, and also appear to have correct audio sync after PAUSE/FF/REW (same as I reported on my April 11 post). The server is transcoding AC3 to AAC (the AC3 option in the player settings NOT checked).

Catching up after a month out of town. Plex Tivo Player 2.6.6 seems to have fixed the outstanding problems with audio sync after a Pause/FF/REW.

A few oddities remain.

Letterbox (widescreen) videos playback fullscreen, vertical stretch. Should have top/bottom black bars.

Also, if “Allow Direct Play” is checked in Video Settings, files that have AAC audio as the 1st track don’t play - player just sits there, no timeout. Back key goes back to info page.

Almost there. Please keep up the good work!
