When you set up a recording, you are able to pick an appropriate library to save it to.
Yes, if you have multiple folder locations configured for that library.
For example, if you are recording a TV show to a library named “TV Shows,” which has folders “C:\Media\TV1” and “C:\Media\TV2” configured, when you set up the recording you can choose “TV Shows” as the library and either the TV1 or TV2 folder as the location.
Thank you. I will create a folder then for Live TV since it will get deleted often I want to use a specific drive for that. So I wont care about the thrash on the drive.
What if you just start watching a TV channel. i.e. use plex to watch live TV and then click rewind. does that go to the same location as plex is installed? Then those files deleted automatically? i.e. dont press record just liveTV feature with rewind.
That will use whatever transcoder temp directory you’ve configured in your server settings (or the default one if you’ve not manually configured it).
Yes. When the live TV session ends, its temporary files are deleted.
You didn’t ask, but it’s worth mentioning that, during a recording, Plex uses the library/location mentioned above for temporary storage of the recording. Once the recording ends, the files in the temporary location (potentially) go through some post-processing and are finally moved to the final configured location (in the appropriate show folder). The temporary location for grabs is a folder named .grab. It’s not really all that important for this conversation, just thought I’d mention in case you see some weird activity in your file system, or files not showing up where you expect during the recording.
I am using DRAM as my temp directory.
Is it possible to move the default directory up the stack?
I.e. in the drop down menu when you click record I get
TV shows
TV recordings
I want it to be
TV recordings
TV shows
So the default directory is auto selected.
The first time you configure a recording to use “TV recordings” as its library, it should become the default library chosen for future recordings you configure.
thanks man! I am all set.
You’re welcome, glad you got it working!
Unless you have 16GB+ of free RAM for you temp drive it isn’t a good idea for Live TV since they can buffer 3-6GB per hour.
