Where does the metadata 'displayTitle' value come from for Audio/Subtitles?

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2630
Player Version#: 4.32.1

Hey all, been wondering this for a while, where does the ‘displayTitle’ or ‘Display Title’ value in Plex come from? It’s used as the default display for Audio and Subtitles over the standard ‘Title’ value. I’ve used prop editors like mkvtoolnix to try and find this value for Audio and Subtitle tracks but it doesn’t appear. Does anyone know of a prop editor that allows modification of those values? I’ve included an example from plex server file info below:

  • Codec: PGS
  • Bitrate: 1 kbps
  • Language: English
  • Header Compression: true
  • Title: Signs and Songs
  • Display Title: English (PGS)

The Display Title not taken from the file it’s artificially generated from other aspects like the Codec, Language and if it has a forced flag.

Thanks for the info. I’m assuming plex provides no way to modify that data or switch the priority to display ‘Title’ instead of ‘Display Title’?

there isn’t sorry

You can modify the data - many of us do - but for about 10 years now we haven’t been able to get Plex interested in actually displaying that info.

‘The Names’ of sub and audio tracks remain ‘a user mystery’.
You’ll have to do like the rest of us - make your best guess.

Here’s the dusty feature request.
You definitely want to mask-up before going in there. Hard to tell what’s living in all that dust:

Right, yeah I’m aware that the Title can be modified, just wish we were able to switch priority to display Title over Display Title. I’ve seen some hacks to do it on the front end through js, but that’s not really a solution for most users.

Gotcha - most of those 300+ users that voted in that stretch of no-man’s-land would probably prefer if Plex just displayed the name we give 'em…

Plex…display the tagged meta-data as is? Now that seems like too much to ask for!

tbh this is why I had to stop using it entirely for music. I have a meticulously tagged music library. Plex wastes its time (and fails) to match albums and songs that have Romanized titles in different languages, or custom tags based on the source of the file, etc.

I love Music in Plex.
I abandoned Plex trying to deal with ANY of it by preferring local metadata and turning off anything that turns Plex on.

Plex is great for some things and some things you just can’t let it get involved in.

I’d love to have it involved just enough to read the name I give my audio and sub tracks. It seems such an easy thing. The names are right there.
