Where have my movies chapters gone?

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314
Player Version#: 10.24.1.2319 (Nvidia SHield TV Pro 2019)

**** major update **** going back thru my library I can clearly see that movies added before 10/3 that have Chapters, all show those chapters. Anything added since does not. It does sound like either a server update issue or a database problem.
When I get a chance to take this server offline I’m going to try some DB corrections. I think any backups I have will either be bad, or way too old to use for a restore**** any other ideas would be appreciated. I’m going to remove extraneous notes from the original post ***** OLD: OK, just noticed that none of my movies (mkv) can display their chapters. VLC and MKVChapterizer clearly see chapters, not none to be found on my client. I can’t tell when this first occurred, but it a major PITA right now. Can’t recall making any changes to the client, server (on WINDOWS) is updated regularly.

More news… now I don’t think it’s the client. I have a secondary PMS that runs on my Synology NAS, when I play the same video there, my Windows desktop client indeed shows the chapter icon and I can navigate chapters. And confirmed that using the Shield client against the NAS based PMS, I do see Chapters,

Adding to the issue, when I run the windows client on the same Windows PMS machine - still no chapters?? so I’m thing now, not a network issue. Database issue???

surprised the community is silent so far, but here’s an update. ran thru the Sqlite recovery process. there were no integrity issues discovered… Rebuilt the database. That itself did not do anything. Moved one mkv out, deleted its plex poster entry, and moved it back in to another MOVIE library, viola chapters appear. Moved it back into it’s home library… still good. Check another mkv, still NG. Ran an ANALYZE on it… yes chapter show. Now running an Analyze on the whole library and see if that does the trick

well, apparently the problem has returned. Seems everything after 1/31 is lacking Chapters, even though they exist within the MKV. I’m going to do a server update later and see what happens. Have tried to run Analyze, but that did nothing. Plex Dance may be needed, and that is a real PITA in my setup. It seems to me it’s an issue on my Windows PMS, cause the backup system on my Synology shows the chapters for those same movies. I do know that PMS is a few releases behind, though I doubt there’s a lot in common between the platforms.

installed Version 1.41.5.9522 and everything I checked now looks good.

It’s back again!!! Seems all content added after 2/9/2025 is missing chapters on my Plex media Server on windows, but the second PMS running on Synology NAS has chapters for all that content. I see a new server install is ready for download, so I’ll try it again; but this is now the 3rd time (at least) in the last year where I’ve detected this issue.

The same is happening to me. PMS v4.148.0, chapters do not show up for newer added media, only the old ones. They do show up correctly on VLC so the media is fine, only Plex is having issues with it.

It’s super annoying as chapters are pretty much mandatory for watching live concerts through Plex.

I continue to see this occur; but so far when I discover it, I run an ANALYZE on the files (or folder) and this seems to fix it (why does this happen sometimes and not others)???

Can you share the XML info (click the orange link for instructions) for a movie which has been on your server for more than 48 hours and which does not have chapter markers?

Clicking on “analyze” resolved it for me, thanks a bunch!

I can’t do that, it would be a hunt and peck thru 1000+ files. Besides, I’ve cleaned up everything I’ve already discovered. I do know this ONLY occurs on my Windows Plex Media Server; my second server - same folder content - is on Synology (I purposely do NOT install updates there for a few months); it had chapters for every file I tested when the Win PMS did NOT.

Sorry to bring this one back. Noticed the same thing on my server. In my case though, I have made a recent change. I replaced an Arc GPU I was using for Quicksync HW acceleration with a smaller/ less thirsty Quadro P400 now using Nvidia HW acceleration. Just thought I’d ask are you also using an Nvidia card in the server that has stopped serving chapter info?

My server runs on a Beelink Sei11 Intel 11th i5 11320H .5Ghz, it comes with Intel Iris Xe Graphics; I still see missing chapters randomly in my library and there’s no way for me to really time these with things like PMS updates. And the other PMS that runs on my Synology NAS never has seen this issue. Analyze does still seem to work generating the thumbnails for chapters

I’ve just had another look at this. I noticed a couple weeks back I had lost chapters on my Samsung TV with plex app and assumed I had ripped the wrong track on my bluray. Tried it on a firestick with the Android/ Fire Plex app and again no chapters. But just checked again on the Windows App client and they are there so perhaps a client issue for me, might be a different issue

Aha. I’ve done some more work on this. It does appear I have same issue as you, as when I manually select Analyse on the library, all the chapters work on the fire stick and samsung TV.

I noticed that at some point recently, Plex have changed the scheduled tasks settings layout, wondering if maybe this could be my problem as I have never had automatic library scanning enabled to stop disks spinning up and down randomly ( I have a 12 drive array on my Dell R730 and a 4 drive array on my ReadyNAS RN214). I’ve no idea how Plex handles chapters, I always just assumed if your client was using DirectPlay it would read them direct from the MKV, perhaps this is not the case and the chapter markers are still presented by PMS to the client. If this is the case, I wonder if my chapters are not being analysed by Plex when I manually refresh the library after I add new files like they did before this changed. I’ll post pictures of my settings below, perhaps yours are similar? Just to make this clearer, when I copy new MKVs, typically source ripped BD/ UHD, onto the server, I have to manually “update all library files” for them to be processed. I’ve setup Plex not to automatically look for new files as my NAS would spin up and spin down all the time.

I’ll take a look a bit later on (phone images are too hard to compare), I know I’ve tried changing these settings a bunch of times. When I first came across this I blamed this on a set of files I have recorded off TCM via CableTV using my then-operative HD Homerun and added to my main library. That led me to pulling all those files and putting them into their own library; that apparently wasn’t the (only) cause.

I’m not seeing anything jumping out of me as there are several differences in the setups (not that I really spent time analyzing my selections)
