I am not aware of a version of PMP which is able to run directly on a QNAP NAS.

This is the server, not the player.
Plex Media Player is a separate download. While may look like the web app, which comes by default with the server, it has a totally different A/V engine, only which makes it possible in the first place to play almost any format without the server transcoding.

No, unless you use a different player.
