Hey guys !
i’m planning to upgrade my server. Cpu will be a 4790k (reused from my old computer) but it appears it doesn’t handle x265 correctly…
So i’m looking for GPU to transcode on-the-fly until 3-4 streams in 1080p.
I know there is a limit of 2 transcode at same time but found a patch to bypass this limit here : https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/9dim68/override_nvidas_2_stream_limitation_on_gtx_gpus/
I found 3 models until now…
Gtx 1050 : very cheap but i’m not confident about his power
Gtx 1650 : much more powerful but according this page :https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix
BUT there is no HEVC B Frame support (i don’t know if i really need it too…) + Volta NVENC (so not the best but i don’t know if i need the best^^)
And finally Gtx 1660 : in terms of power it should be perfect, but price is almost double…
So i would like to buy gtx 1050, but i don’t want have a poor server juste to save some money…
Maybe some of you have already tested these gpu ?
This does not matter for Plex.
There are two parts to transcoding: decoding from the current format and encoding to the new format.
HEVC B frame support is for the encoding process (NVENC).
Plex encodes to H.264.
So, you do not need to worry about HEVC B-frame support for Plex.
Try this without an add-in GPU board first. The 4790K can easily support 3 - 4 1080p H.264 streams.
For H.264, it will use the on-board HD 4600 graphics for both decode and encode.
For H.265, it cannot decode hardware, but it will still encode to H.264 using the HD 4600 graphics.

Ohhhh okay, yeah i could just test with only cpu^^
But decoding files from x265 will not be an issue without any hardware acceleration ?
The 4790k is a powerful processor. Try it and see how it works. Might save you some money. You can always add a GPU card later.
