I have (2) Mac mini’s. Which is a better Plex Server for the long haul?
Option #1 — MGEM2LL/A
Mac mini (Late 2014)
Processor: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Model ID: Mac mini7,1
Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB
Storage: 256 GB SSD
Single Core Geekbench Score: 660
Multi-Core Geekbench Score: 1338
Option #2 — MD388LL/A
Mac mini (Late 2012)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
Model ID: Mac mini6,2
Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
Storage: 1TB HDD
Single Core Geekbench Score: 721
Multi-Core Geekbench Score: 2837
All my media resides on a NAS so I’m not concerned with the size of the internal storage, rather more about overall performance and future proofing.
So,
Option #1
Newer architecture (2014), better graphics, faster SSD BUT slower clock speeds, less RAM (4 GB) & fewer cores (2).
Option #2
Older architecture (2012), worse graphics, slower HDD BUT faster clock speeds, more RAM (16 GB) and more cores (4).
What specs should I be focused on for best performance?
Another concern is that future OS’s will drop support for older Mac’s before newer ones so I don’t want it to get left behind anytime soon.
