Guys please help. I have bought and tried 3 micro USB cables and none of them seem to work, nothing appears on my MAC. 1 of the cables was from a Kindle, the other a Blackberry cable and another normal micro usb.

Did you plugin the power cord?

Mac/Win7/8? More data = better

he wrote it's a mac.

anyway make sure you putted in power cord too.

worked for me with micro usb from ipad keyboard case  :P

Yeah I put in the power cord and no difference. The light on the front just blinks

Have you tried power first, let the atv boot up and get a steady light and then plug in the usb?

Not all microUSB are created equally - I have a short one from a BlueTooth headset that is charge only, maybe the case for a couple of the device specific ones you have

Power the aTV normally with it connected via HDMI to the TV, once it's fully up unplug the HDMI but leave the power and plug in the microUSB.  Otherwise, it goes into DFU for restoring from scratch.

Also, I think you're best off if you have iTunes exited so iTunes isn't intercepting any communications to the aTV.

I used an old micro USB for a Nokia phone. But yeah let atv boot ( so no flashing) before you plug in USB. I didn’t have hdmi or sound plugged in for this. Also maybe try different USB slot. iTunes did start for me automatically but I just closed it. This was on win 7 though.
I’m amazed this day & age how many USB things fail on pc/mac one day the USB device can be fine next : USB device not recognised… Aaaaahhhhhh……
If that fails you may have to try different pc.
Good luck

I tried what you suggested but it made no difference. I think I will have to go and buy an official one

used the one wich came with my Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone and that did the job!

Just bought another from ASDA and NADA

well I just tried this

  1. Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
  2. Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
  3. Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
  4. Open iTunes.
  5. Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

And it appeared in itunes, but wont detect in 'apple configurator' so i unplugged it again and now it wont detect it at all!!! whats going on....

You didn't follow those docs... did you?

Switch 2 and 3 - FIRST connect the power cord, let it boot until the thing stops flashing. THEN plug in the USB cable...

If you do it your way, the aTV will be in "recovery mode". A mode you really don't want for uploading a certificate...

Now that you restored it to factory settings, bring it to your TVset, do the setup there (language selection and stuff). Come back to your computer and try again, like described:

- FIRST power

- THEN USB

- Upload your certificate

No worries... it works. :-D

haha I have tried everything believe me just to get my mac to see it, the only way was to do it like above ^ and even now I cannot get it to do it again. Im stumped on this. The last ditch attempt is to restore the apple tv and update my mac itunes etc in the hope things might work but i doubt it :(

nope doesnt work. I give up. I have tried 6 micro usb cables, they cant all be wrong!! sod it

Hint: it’s not the micro USB cable that’s throwing you off. Stop fixating.

this helps! + makes perfect sense. NOT

Please call a friend with a Windows laptop and have him over. Feed him beers while you try uploading the cert with the Windows laptop. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with your cable(s).

Why windows?

ok guys I got so fed up of this I decided to ram the cable in, unplug the power plug it back in, plug it in then put the cable in instantly and finally I got my mac to see it. I have installed the cert and it said success. I then downloaded the latest plex files and updated the cert path. I checked everything but still the apple tv says the trailers are unavailable. here is the log of plex
