Plex doesn’t always find the correct metadata for a file, actually for my music it is all being indexed as the same band (we’re talking 7000+ songs all being recognized as Delta Spirit, the file plays properly and is named properly, but the metadata shows the cover for the Delta Spirit album).
Additionally, I have a bunch of files not being indexed at all. A lot of them I realize are because on my computer I’ve set up my folders like this:
Movies
-Seen Movies
TV Shows
-Animated
-Comedy
-Drama
-Documentaries (I put movies and tv show documentaries in here)
So you’ll notice that I have all my documentaries in my TV shows folder. This way when I add that folder to TV SHows in plex, it is now trying to match everything as a TV show, but some of them are movies. What can I do to make sure that files are being matched correctly, whether they are in the right folder type or not?

Embedded ‘Title’ metatags in mp4/m4v files are often incorrect.
So either delete them from your files or instruct Plex to disregard them:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeate the procedure in these locations as well:
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
The intricacies of tv shows:
- Look up your show on TheTVDB
- Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like
§ : % *
, simply leave them out.
- Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
- Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder.
Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext
(’- additional info’ can be left out)
- After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.
Filebot helps immensely to bring file and folder names of movies and tv shows into order.
The issue with one cover art appearing for all albums in a library:
Thanks!
So I checked under Settings > Server > Agents > Shows > The TVDB. There is only the TVDB and Local Media Assets checked. Even if i try to check the others they don’t stay checked.
I guess the issue is as stated above, I’ll need to do some reorganizing in my library for those Documentaries. Simple enough.
Is there a way to see files that were not indexed? A list of files that were in the folders but not properly named?
Finally, I did also follow the instructions in the provided link regarding one cover art appearing for all albums, and the issue is that the music which have no album information are the ones being defaulted to the Delta Spirit album cover. Is there a way for me to set a default?

The instructions are about finding the rogue cover graphic file which is used (unintendedly) as the default.
If you really want a default, then replace the rogue file with a file of your choice.

The WebTools Plug-In has a feature which does exactly that.

Thanks, I’ll try this out!

I did search but didn’t find any file, in other words the rogue file is either hiding very well, or I don’t have one.
This is an easy fix. you need to edit your albums with a Tag Editor. I have tons of albums and the only way to fix this is to manually edit the albums and insert the cover page within… problem solved.

As explained in the guide, the rogue file is most likely tagged as ‘hidden’ and/or ‘system’. These files are not visible by default. You have to explicitly tell the file explorer to show them.
Their file names must not necessarily be albumname.jpg
.
Other graphic file formats are also possible, including .tbn
@Sillyvain Yeah, but the issue is that I don’t want to add album info to all my songs. So I’d really prefer just a different default, similar to what iTunes does if there is no album artwork.
@OttoKerner Yeah I did enable to show hidden files folder and drives, and then I manually searched the folder with all my music. I just organized by type, and didn’t see any hidden files. Then I used the search function to actually search the entire drive for any .jpg (and just now searched .tbn) and couldn’t find the artwork for delta spirit anywhere.

The display of ‘system’ files is a separate checkbox.
@OttoKerner Thanks that worked! Sorry I missed the system files.
