Why are tv shows NOT recording? DVR problems

Why are my shows sporadically recording? This is so frustrating. It’s very hit and miss if a show will record even though the red dot shows up. For instance, I want it to record General Hospital every day, so I have it set for all shows. The red dot shows up but once again it did not record. Another example is Survivor, I set it to record all new shows. It did not record last week’s episode. Tonight I am trying to record the Bachelor. I keep saying record all new shows and the red dot appears; however as soon as I move away the red dot goes blank, so I reset it and the red dot appears and then goes away…repeatedly. So it’s doubtful that it will record. This is also happening on other shows, it appears that it will record but doesn’t. Good thing I still have Hulu, because so far Plex is not working for my family.

Yea, very disappointed with Plex so far after 2 months use, coming from Win7 Media Center. I just realized SNL was not recording, was 20 minutes until the end. The grid in Chrome on Win10 shows it’s set to record and showed the red NEW icon, it simply failed.

Emby was just as bad.

Damnit.

This is truly annoying and happens way too often. I’m finding that the first show scheduled to record on any given day simply doesn’t. No idea why and nothing in the logs.

[This is related to another nuisance problem I have. Some of the stations which appear in the guide cannot actually be received at my location, but Plex insists on attempting to do so, even when I specifically select a different channel for recording.]

Hello??? Anyone home at Plex? This has become a serious problem. Plex is failing to record almost every movie I schedule. I can look in the logs, see it scheduled, but then the schedule is changed to some future date, even though the movie is on and we can watch it live. WTF? How do I go about debugging this?

As of yesterday Plex started skipping scheduled TV shows, even though we watched them live. They were properly scheduled, according to the logs, and then they disappeared from the schedule. I presume this has something to do with the program guide, which is suddenly full of “unknown airing” messages. This includes the schedules for major networks, which are not unknown in any other program guide. Something is very much wrong and needs attention, now!

Found this somewhere on this site: In June of 2019, Plex will be making a change to its metadata provider that supplies program guide data for our Live TV/DVR feature.

Does this change also apply to the U.S. guide? (Please say “yes.”)

I personally use Channels DVR without any problems but have also played with PLEX DVR and EMBY DVR. I heard on other forums that PLEX does not play well with others in the sharing of the HDHomeRun Tuners. Have any of you checked my.hdhomerun.com to make sure you have tuners that not not in use. I know some are testing with both PLEX and EMBY.

Thank you. Good to know, but probably not what’s causing my problem. We have a HDHomeRun Quatro and an Amazon Recast. They ought to be independent of each other, i.e., they are both connected to the same antenna, via a splitter, but otherwise operate separately. There shouldn’t be a problem with “sharing” of the HDHomeRun, but what’s happening is both annoying and mysterious.

I just conducted a simple experiment. I stopped and started the Plex Media Server (which is running on Linux), then went into the desktop app (Windows) and scheduled a program to record this evening. (There are no other shows scheduled to record on the Plex DVR,) Then I pulled the server log and reviewed it. The show I just selected to record appears in the schedule to record on 4/27, not tonight.

Based on my own software development experience, and the bugs I created, my suspicion is that this is caused by a timezone problem. The show I selected to record is on at 6 p.m. and it’s now 4:30. If timezone isn’t being interpreted correctly, then the scheduler could believe that the start time has already passed. I see this effect in the logs for all the shows that did not record. The schedule is correct until shortly before the show starts, then the schedule changes to some future date.

I’ve just learned how to take the recordings off the Recast and load them into Plex, but I haven’t yet figured out how to run the code that deletes the commercials. I vaguely recall that there’s a standalone program available somewhere that might do that. That’s the primary reason I prefer Plex over the Recast. If Amazon were to add the commercial removal logic, I’d consider dumping Plex, although I must admit I do prefer scheduling recordings on a screen with a keyboard and mouse as opposed to using voice.

I have not tried the commercial “removal” in PLEX. My DVR will just mark the commercials and do a auto skip during play back. My concern is if removal took too much you can not just manually rewind because it was removed.

How accurate have you found the PLEX removal logic?

The commercial removal is sort of hit and miss. Sometimes it doesn’t recognize the commercial break at all, or does suddenly in the middle of a series of commercials. Other times it does an excellent job. “Unpredictable” is the proper description, but that’s a problem. It’s really good at deleting the commercials near the end of a show, which also deletes the preview of the next week. If it doesn’t recognize the commercials, then we start fast forwarding in 30-second intervals, only to go too far and end up backing up to catch what we miss. However, it’s fantastic compared to the nuisance of the Amazon Recast, which takes a lot of finger clicks to get past the commercials (which have become of unpredictable length, so as soon as you think you know how many clicks are required, you’re wrong!)

Having this same issue plus one that randomly says there is not enough disk space even though all files go to the same folder that has hundreds of GBs free only happens with some recordings though not all. I’ve been using Plex DVR with HDHomeRun Prime since it was released with none of these issues until a couple months ago. Very disappointing please fix.
