Why can't I stream my local music to my android Plex app?

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest

In the Plex description it is says…

  • The video/music/photo media you own is yours. Of course, we don’t charge you in any way for that.

Then why can i not stream my local music to my android free version of the plex app?
I can stream to my android Alexa app with no problem. Why… when you say you don’t charge in anyway for the music that I own do I have to sign up for a subscription?

You don’t need to buy a subscription.
You can use the Plex Media Server for free – that being said, Plex is a business and need to pay their developers… one fraction of that comes from the mobile apps requiring a one-time activation (usually ~5$). If you have a Plex Pass subscription, this activation will be included.

If you’re super keen on getting stuff for free you can access the music in your Plex Media Server through the Android’s browser.

Thanks for the quick reply… I will look into the android browser. My peeve was mostly from there statement… " * The video/music/photo media you own is yours. Of course, we don’t charge you in any way for that." And then ask for payment to to do just that.

Any way if it is just a one time $5 bill, I can do that. ;O)

Nobody is asking you for money to access your media. You however want to use Plex’ ecosystem to do so and those apps are not free on all platforms.

You can use PMS for free and the same is true for their web app, the desktop app(s) as well as the big screen apps (smart tv apps, streaming box apps…). Also you’re not being charged to use your media – a fair comparison might be you’re free to use a highway but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to fuel your car.

Semantics… just one of the faults with the English language. ;O)
thanks again
