Why do movies always import with a cropped horizontal poster?

Server Version#: Synology NAS

Whenever I import a new movie, it automatically creates a poster from a database (not really sure what database), and the poster is always a cropped version of a horizontal poster. I need to manually edit the poster to assign one of the vertical posters. This has been going on for a really long time, and I’m getting tired of it. Is there a setting I’m missing that would change this behavior? I don’t think it happens when I import a TV series.

I do the edit from my Windows PC, but the server is on a NAS.

This sounds like you have your agents ranked incorrectly.

Hm. Here’s what I have:

And this:

Does that “Prefer artwork based on library Language” have anything to do with it?

Anything under
Settings - [server] - Agents
is irrelevant, if your library is set to use the “Plex Movie” scanner and agent.

Please verify again which metadata agent has been set in the properties of your library.

What I showed you above is unchanged. I’m not sure what you’re asking me to check. Should I uncheck the Plex Movie (legacy) agent?

Please edit your library, go to the “Advanced” tab, report what is set as “Agent” and “Scanner”.

Thanks for that link, because I was looking under general settings, and it might have taken me a long time to find the page you were asking about. Here it is:

Make sure to clear the check boxes
“Use local assets”
as well as
“Prefer local metadata”
on this tab.

Then Refresh Metadata on an affected movie.

Are these older movies, with originally hand-drawn posters?

I have just done that. Is Plex Movie the best for scanner and agent?

These are movies I’m recording with my Playon account and adding to the library. I did, earlier on, upload my DVD collection, and I don’t recall the problem occurring from that.

I have already manually fixed everything there now, so it’s a matter of not having to keep doing it in the future.

It is the currently supported one. If you want to use all Plex features, you better use this one.

That’s no really relevant.

Are these older movies, with originally hand-drawn posters?

If they are, there are some people who have bought the copyright to some of the posters and are now going round and issue takedown requests.

I’ll see what happens when I add the next movie. Thanks.

I guess some of the classic movies fit this description. The posters came from the Plex database, so I don’t know if they are even stored on my server, or just pulled in as needed.

Just to update, I added one recording after making that single change (clearing checkbox for “Use local assets”), and the new recording appeared in the library with a proper vertical poster. (But it was a replacement for a bad recording that I’d deleted, and I’d already fixed the issue on the old recording.)

Now I’m away for two weeks, so I won’t be trying again for a while. I’ll report back later.
